PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to set fancy cut gemstones in bead settings that are embedded in claws. The setting is held by claws and stones set in beads in each one of the claws.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Plan and prepare to set the gemstones.
  • Cut the beads and set the gemstones.
  • Set the gemstone.
  • Apply the desired finish.

    The following range applies to this unit standard:
  • Fancy cut gemstones are stones that have fancy shapes like a heart, a marques, an oval, etc. Fancy cut stones, in jewellery definition, refer to shapes other than round.

    Plan and prepare to set the gemstones.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Setting tools, materials and equipment are selected and prepared in accordance with jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The gemstones are inspected and examined in terms of design and jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The jewellery item is inspected and examined to determine whether it is in accordance with the design requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Occupational hazards and risks are identified and dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Housekeeping and safe working practices are adhered to and demonstrated in accordance with occupational health and safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The consequences of not adhering to correct preparation, housekeeping and safe working practices are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.

    Raise the beads and set the gemstones.

    The beads to hold the gemstones in the claws are raised according to jewellery manufacturing requirements.

    The gemstones are set to industry standards.

    The consequences of using the wrong tools, materials and equipment, or raising the beads unevenly and out of format, are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.

    Set the center gemstone.

    The gemstone is fitted and seated between the claws according to jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The gemstone is set to jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of using the wrong tools, materials and equipment, or setting the gemstone unevenly and out of format are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply the desired finish to the jewellery item.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Setting tools and equipment are used and maintained according to manufacturer's specification and specified requirements.

    The beads securing the gemstones on the claws are shaped and finished according to jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The setting around the centre gemstone is cleaned, shaped and finished according to industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The center gemstone is set to jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of not applying the desired finish, and thus deviating from the design specifications, are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.
