PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to prepare the metal model for wax setting, before incorporating the diamonds and gemstones into the wax models. Wax setting is the incorporation of diamonds and gemstones into wax models, for the purpose of mass producing jewellery through casting the jewellery pieces with diamonds and gemstones.

People credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Plan and layout the seating for the diamonds and gemstones in the metal model.
  • Prepare the seats for the diamonds and gemstones in the wax models.
  • Set the diamonds and gemstones in the wax models.
  • Apply the desired finish to the wax models.

  • Stones that have been tested to resist the heat during the casting process, are to be set in the wax models.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and layout the seating of the diamonds and gemstones in the metal model.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Setting tools, material and equipment are selected and prepared for use in accordance with the specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The diamonds and gemstones are inspected and examined for suitability for the given design and specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The jewellery item is inspected and examined to determine whether it is in accordance with the design and specified requirements.

    The layout for the incorporation of gemstones is determined in accordance with the given requirements.

    Occupational hazards and risks are identified and dealt with in accordance with workplace procedures.

    Housekeeping and safe working practices are adhered to and demonstrated in accordance with occupational health and safety requirements.

    The consequences of not adhering to correct preparation, housekeeping and safety practices are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.

    Prepare the seats for the diamonds and gemstones in the wax models.

    The diamonds and gemstones are inspected and examined in terms of suitability to the design and specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The wax models are inspected and examined to determine whether they are in accordance with the design and specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Preparation for seating the diamonds and gemstones is done according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of using the wrong tools, materials and equipment, or not preparing the seats properly for the incorporation of the diamonds and gemstones, are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Set the diamonds and gemstones in the wax models.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Setting tools and equipment are used and maintained according to manufacturer's specification and specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The diamonds and gemstones are fitted and seated in the wax models according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The gemstones are set in the wax models to given requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of choosing the wrong tools, materials and equipment, or setting the gemstones unevenly and out of format, are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply the desired finish to the wax models.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Setting tools and equipment are used and maintained according to manufacturer's specification and workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The wax embedding the gemstones in the particular setting is shaped and finished according to design requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The wax setting around the gemstones are cleaned, shaped and finished according to design requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of applying the wrong finish, and thus deviating from the design specifications, are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.
