PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners within the Maritime Sector who work/wish to work as an officer on the bridge of a ship. This Unit Standard meets the needs of the sub-field and of the society by providing competent maritime officers who by being able to execute and manage bridge conduct procedures, contribute to a safer environment on the ship and at sea. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills required to carry out specific duties and meet specified responsibilities within a defined scope of operation and authority on the bridge of a ship.

The competencies achieved by the learner in this Unit Standard will, in the case of the Merchant Navy and the Fishing Industry, contribute to the economic upliftment of the country, and in the case of the South African Navy, contribute the preservation of human life and the defence of South African warships, territorial waters and/or area of responsibility, thus providing a safer and secure society for South African citizens.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Bridge conduct procedures are executed to maintain vessel appearance, water tight integrity, materials and weapon state, conduct of personnel and state of readiness.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate understanding of the Officer of the Watch's duties and responsibilities. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Responsibilities are indicated for all states of readiness (SA Navy only). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A description is given of officers on a vessel in terms of how they are identified, their scope of authority and key functions and responsibilities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A description is given of own authority and responsibilities in relation to the chain of command. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A description is given of the definition of authority and required responces for the Officer of the Watch. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Authority includes con, command; and control and charge (SA Navy only).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A description is given of the relationship between the bridge and other departments on the ship with reference to the responsibility for command and control and the flow of information for defined purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A description is given of the Officer of the Watch's responsibility for the general seamanlike appearance and state of the vessel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A description is given of the Officer of the Watch's responsibility for the safety of personnel on the upper deck with reference to specific areas, conditions and duties. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Areas, conditions and duties include but not limited to Radiation Hazard, work at high elevation, work in confined spaces, work in heavy sea conditions and Law of Armed Conflict requirements for identifying and reporting warships (SA Navy only).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    An explanation is given of the Officer of the Watch's responsibilities with respect to access to compartments and keys. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Procedures in a merchant marine context includes International Ship and Port Security Code.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Vessel seamanlike appearance is maintained throughout the watch. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Water tight integrity is monitored and maintained at a standard consistent with the prevailing sea state. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The state of materials, cargo and equipment is monitored and maintained at a state of readiness appropriate to operational readiness and the prevailing sea state. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment includes weapons (SA Navy only).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The conduct of all personnel is checked to be consistent with state of readiness and enforcement of the ship's routine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Orders to effect a change in the state of readiness of the vessel are given which are consistent with prevailing environmental and operational conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A description is given of the roles and responsibilities of crew in a changed state of readiness. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Changed states includes changed combat states (SA Navy only).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Reports on state of readiness of the vessel are completed as per standard operating procedures and checklists. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reports include but not limited to all incoming reports on the current and/or changed state of readiness.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The hand over and take over of the watch is executed in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    The ship is ensured to be in the proper state in preparation for the next activity or evolution. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Activities related to bridge conduct procedures are evaluated to confirm that they have been carried out as directed and according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reports are prepared using the required report forms or logs, and in the format required by prescribed organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Final reports on the outcomes of bridge conduct procedures are evaluated to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of command and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Information on deviations in bridge conduct procedures is disseminated via approved channels to assist with refinement of equipment, commands, responses and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Evaluations of bridge conduct procedures conducted are used to validate and/or contribute to the development of effective training evolutions.
