PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to give assistance to persons living with a disability or chronic illness to become independent in activities of daily living. Activities of daily living are applied for individuals to age and level of incapacitation. The health worker is able to teach clients with disabilities and related chronic illnesses in self care, household and social/recreational activities.

The types of problems giving rise to disability include, but are not limited to, those pertaining to sight, movement, feeling and touch, hearing and understanding, speaking, learning, sphincter control, breathing, pain.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining and describing the different components of activities of daily living (ADL).
  • Evaluating the person's ability to perform ADL.
  • Implementing and integrating different strategies in ADL.
  • Designing, developing, monitoring and evaluating an appropriate programme to assist the person in implementing ADL.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain and describe the different components of activities of daily living (ADL). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The three categories of ADL are described and explained in relation to a disability or related chronic illness. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    ADL includes but is not limited to self-care, household and social leisure activities.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The activities available in the client's community and the way in which these activities are carried out within the different age groups is described with examples in relation to own work context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of doing ADL for a healthy lifestyle is discussed with examples of their benefits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The stages of progression of HIV/AIDS and the role of ADL at each stage is described in basic terms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A simple activity analysis is conducted to determine how activities are carried out and what would need to be included in person's ADL programme. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Evaluate the client's ability to perform ADL. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The client's ability to carry out ADL activities in relation to own disability are observed to determine his/her capacity to implement an ADL programme. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The assessment procedure in the WHO document "Training in the community for people with a disability".
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects of the client's problem and disability are determined in relation to the impact on significant others. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The problems identified are listed and prioritised according to the needs of the client and significant others. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The degree of assistance and training needed is determined in order to design an appropriate ADL programme. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The factors influencing the degree of assistance include, but are not limited to, total care; assisted activity performance including supervision; use of an assistive device.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The circumstances which may require referral of the client to other professionals are identified with examples.

    Implement and integrate different strategies in ADL. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Energy conservation strategies are analysed and implemented in carrying out ADL. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Those requiring energy conservation strategies include, but are not limited to, persons with disabilities related to HIV/AIDS, the four stages thereof and pain thresholds in each stage, other disabilities such as seeing, hearing, speaking, moving, feeling (poor sensation), learning, breathing.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A suitable balanced routine of ADL is planned together with the client and significant other. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Teaching strategies in helping a client to become independent in ADL are identified in relation to disability. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Design, develop, monitor and evaluate an appropriate programme to assist the client in implementing ADL. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An appropriate programme of assistance in ADL is designed in relation to identified disability and extent of disability. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Programmes include but are not limited to self-care, household activities and social and recreational activities.
  • Self-care tasks include but are not limited to eating, dressing, washing self, brushing teeth, going to the toilet, nail and skin care.
  • Household activities include but are not limited to preparing food, cooking, sweeping, washing the floor, dishes and clothes, ironing clothes, making beds, collecting and carrying water and fire wood, growing vegetables, shopping and using money.
  • Social and recreational activities include but are not limited to music, choir, handicrafts, dance, drum majorettes, soccer, netball, community meetings, support groups, burial society, women's groups.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A client is assisted in identifying personal household tasks and how to be independent in relation to proportion of disability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The client is assisted in the selection of suitable social and recreational activities within the community according to own problems and interests. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Problems identified in implementing self care, household and recreational/social tasks are identified and relevant assistive devices and precautionary measures are implemented to help the client in completing the respective tasks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Client's ADL programme is monitored and evaluated regularly to determine continuing suitability and adapted when necessary.
