PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of demonstrating knowledge of vehicle tyre standards; demonstrating knowledge of vehicle tyres, types, and sizes; diagnosing and rectifying abnormalities in vehicle tyre conditions; demonstrating knowledge of vehicle wheels and rectifying wheel defects.

This unit standard makes provision for the automotive retail industry with special reference to vehicle tyre standards with regard to rectifying faults in automotive vehicle tyres and wheels in the following categories; Light commercial vehicles; passenger vehicles; recreational vehicles; Motor cycles; Tri-cycles; Quad cycles; Boat trailers light and heavy commercial vehicles and Off Road (ATR) vehicles.

On achievement of this unit standard, the learner will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of vehicle tyres, types, and sizes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    South African tyre standards are described in terms of legal criteria for road going vehicles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The South African standards for re-grooving a tyre are described in terms of setting the standards for the re-grooving of a tyre. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tyre defects are identified and explained in terms of their characteristics and causes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A defect may include but are not limited to a tyre being exposed, worn, damaged cords, bulges in side wall, repairs and or separations.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of vehicle tyres, types, and sizes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tyres are identified according to tyre manufacturer specifications in terms of their types and sizes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of tyres may include but are not limited to tubed, tubeless, cross-ply, radial ply, fabric and steel belted tyres whether for a car and or a light and heavy commercial vehicle.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Side wall markings are identified and explained according to tyre manufacturer specifications and their meaning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tyre tread patterns are identified according to their type and tyre manufacturer specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Tyre tread patterns may include/relate to but is not limited to pattern direction; angle of pattern and length of pattern.
  • Pattern design may include but is not limited to standard, asymmetrical and or directional patterns.

    Dynamic rolling circumference characteristics are explained in terms of tyre types and sizes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tyre valve types are identified and explained in terms of manufacturer advised uses. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A valve type may include but is not limited to rubber or metal valves.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    "Driving" and "directional" tyres is compared in terms of purpose and characteristics. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The comparison should include but is not limited to driving tyres compared to non-driving standard, asymmetrical and directional tyres with reference to design and wear characteristics.

    Explain tyre abnormalities in vehicle tyres.

    Tyre construction is explained in terms of the different component parts. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Construction may include but is not limited to cross-ply/bias-ply, belted cross-ply/bias-ply and radial-ply.
  • Components may include but is not limited to casing ply, fabric belts, steel belts, overlay, tread, sidewall, beads, apexes and chafers.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Abnormal tyre wear are explained in terms of cause and rectification. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The cause of abnormal tyre wear may include but is not limited to air pressures relating to load and tyre manufacturer specifications, non-matching tyres, tyre defects, radial tyre pull, uneven wear, tread depth, ply rating and type of tyre.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effects tyres can have on vehicle handling are explained according to vehicle and manufacturer specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Effects may include but are not limited to over-steer, under-steer, straight ahead driving, slip angle; tyre circumferences, tyre profiles, air pressure, tyre section width, tyre to rim match, aspect ratio, overall diameters and static loaded radius.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate knowledge of vehicle wheel rims. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Wheel rim types and sizes are identified in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of wheel rims may include but are not limited to alloy, steel, wheel dimensions, single and 2-3 piece rims, tube type, tubeless and space saver.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects wheel rims can have on vehicle handling are explained in terms of wheel types and sizes. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Effects of wheel rims may include but are not limited to wheel balance, wheel shape, accident damage, vibration, wheel fitment and wheel nut torque.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The procedure to have abnormalities rectified is explained in accordance with vehicle manufacturer specifications and company procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Abnormalities may include but are not limited to wheel balance, wheel shape, accident damage, vibration, wheel fitment and wheel nut torque.
