PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners within the Sovereignty of the State sub-field who wish to work in the maritime environment as a warfare operations officer on a warship. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills in operation room watch keeping, which is needed to operate with confidence onboard a warship during a mission.

The competencies achieved by the learner in this Unit Standard will contribute to the preservation of human life and the defence of South African warships, territorial waters and/or area of responsibility, thus providing a safer and secure society for South African citizens.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare to carry out watch keeping operations in the operations room. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Operations Room equipment is used according to its purpose, operation, capabilities and limitations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Liaison takes place with the weapons engineer so as to ensure that the operations room equipment is serviceable, available and at required levels of readiness for the particular stage of the mission. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment testing is coordinated and supervised at each handover of the watch. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An Operations Room readiness report is submitted to the appropriate authorities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Watch keeping arrangements and procedures are established among operations room personnel according to the required state of readiness for the disposition to threat. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Watch handover between personnel is managed according to standing orders and standard operating procedures.

    Safe navigation is supported by monitoring the passage and obtaining from and providing to other vessels information in this regard.

    The tactical picture is monitored and maintained within the constraints of the emission control policy.

    Contacts are designated and the tactical picture updated and shared with the whole force to facilitate appropriate responses in terms of assigned roles and responsibilities.

    Assets are directed in accordance with mission requirements and the specific orders of the fleet commander.

    Weapon movement is monitored and controlled in line with the requirements of the mission plan and so as to ensure safety is applied.

    Sensor equipment is set to settings appropriate to the required intelligence information, expected targets and promote a more focused and specific search.

    Vessels in the vicinity are identified and classified by means of electronic warfare information with respect to the possible threat they pose. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Electronic warfare information includes radar, radio and other electronic transmissions.
  • Classification of information includes bearing of contact and type of vessel.
