PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who wish to work in the maritime environment. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will achieve the knowledge and practical competencies required to plan, control and co-ordinate the fighting of flooding on board a ship.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Describe flood and related damage control equipment.
  • Fight shipboard flooding.
  • Assess and report on damage.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe flood and related damage control equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Shipboard areas that are serviced by salvage pumps and overboard discharge points for salvage pumps and eductors are located and identified on systems drawings and on the vessel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An explanation is given of the capacity and limitations of salvage pumps. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Capacity includes but not limited to pumping rates in tonnes per hour of all fixed and portable salvage systems on board.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment serviced by safety stops and quick shut off valves are located and identified on systems drawings and on the vessel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An explanation is given of the role of safety stops and quick shut off valves in fighting floods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A description is given of the watertight and gastight integrity of the ship with respect to the purpose and meaning of markings on each door or hatch.

    Fight shipboard flooding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All flood fighting equipment is checked for serviceability and corrective actions are taken in the cases of defects. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment includes both fixed and portable.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective equipment is checked for serviceability before fighting flooding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Flood fighting equipment is selected which is appropriate to the severity of the flooding and damage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Flood fighting equipment is directed and operated in order to contain the flood. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Damage control personnel and teams are directed in a safe manner in terms of their duties and responsibilities so as to contain flooding and minimize flooding. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Personnel may include but is not limited to the duty mechanician, duty technician, attack party, support party and containment party.
  • Duties include reaction to alarm (portable equipment), entry to scene of incident (full suits and equipment) and isolation of compartments (closing doors/hatches.

    Commands are given in a clear, concise and correct using maritime terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The safety of the vessel and personnel is monitored during damage control activities through constant observation and feedback.

    Information in terms of the flooding is collected from flood fighters and supervisory personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The flooding is assessed in terms of causes and consequences of the flooding in terms of damage to the ship, equipment and personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reports on damage are completed and submitted to the appropriate authority within agreed time frames. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Information relating to the flooding is disseminated via approved channels to assist with refinement of equipment, responses and procedures.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
