PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the electrical Medium/High Voltage reticulation/distribution environment.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to do the following on Medium/High Voltage station apparatus:
  • Visual/routine inspection and report defects.
  • Carry out routine functional tests of auxiliaries and indications.
  • Capturing data on inspection sheets or with the aid of electronic data loggers.
  • Carry out visual fault location during faulty day/night/abnormal weather conditions.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • Apply and adhere to electrical safety.
  • Read & interpret station electric/network diagrams.
  • Regulations for safe access to Medium/High Voltage station yards.
  • Identification of Medium/High Voltage apparatus and components. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Medium/High Voltage stations may include but are not limited to above 1kV - 132kV indoor and outdoor stations and live chambers.
  • Apparatus will include, but are not limited to Medium/High Voltage ground-or-structure mounted isolators, circuit breakers, switches, load breaks, transformers, mini substations, sealing ends, surge arrestors.
  • Hardware will include, but are not limited to Medium/High Voltage wood/lattice/steel/concrete pole structures, cables, conductors, stays & struts, insulators, clamps, bolts and pre-formed products.
  • Related equipment include, but are not limited to control/protection/alarm panels, buildings/enclosures, fences, access gates/roads/doors/locking systems, earthing systems, junction/termination boxes/kiosks, fans and pumps.
  • Conditions include but are not limited to routine and breakdown inspections during day/night times and all weather conditions.

    Job instructions are obtained and the station/apparatus/related equipment to be inspected is identified according to geographical/electrical network diagrams. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Task instructions are interpreted and a sequence of operation is planned. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Access to the affected station/apparatus/related equipment is arranged according to job instructions or breakdown reports where necessary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Appropriate inspection sheets/data recording equipment are identified and obtained according to data management requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Inspect and identify defects on Medium/High Voltage station apparatus and associated hardware.

    Conditions are assessed and safety measures implemented according to safe work procedures.

    The condition of station apparatus/hardware is visually inspected from ground level according to routine/breakdown inspection procedures.

    The condition of station apparatus/hardware is recorded according to inspection sheet/data recording requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety precautions/procedures are followed before, during and after inspection.

    Inspect, record readings and carry out functional tests on Medium/High Voltage station.

    Alarms, indications and auxiliaries are manually tested for functionality and malfunctioning/abnormalities noted for follow-up according to inspection sheet/ data recording requirements.

    Manually tested station related equipment is restored to operational state according to applicable standards/local requirements.

    Inspection sheets/recorded data is submitted/processed according to local data management systems/procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Serious defects/hazards are reported for immediate follow-up/rectification as per local fault reporting procedures.
