PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering, Generation, Distribution, Transmission, Construction, Mining and Renewable Energy Sectors. This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding required for the maintenance and repair of direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Explaining the requirements pertaining to maintaining and repairing direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear.
  • Preparing the tools, equipment and work site for the maintenance activity.
  • Maintaining and repairing direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear.
  • Testing direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear for operation.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of learners within the electrical environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction.

    Direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear include, but are not limited to:
  • Single phase motors and control gear.

    Maintaining and repairing direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear may include, but are not limited to:
  • External cleaning and inspection.
  • Testing and adjusting of safety and protection devices.
  • Identification and rectification of defects, for example, loose terminations and defective components which will only be apparent by de-energising the equipment and opening up enclosures, or using, where necessary, tools or test equipment (or both).

    The safety requirements applicable to maintaining direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear are explained with reference to worksite and statutory requirements.

    Tools, material, and equipment required are selected, examined for defects and transported to the work site.

    The equipment to be maintained is identified and verified according to work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The worksite is examined for hazardous and sub-standard conditions and corrective action taken where necessary according to safe work procedures and critical task analyses.

    The relevant production personnel are notified and the maintenance activities are integrated with other disciplines and associated equipment according to plant availability and customer requirements.

    Isolation and lockout procedures are adhered to according to safe working practices and worksite requirements.

    Proper and safe fault finding procedures are followed and defects are dealt with according to worksite procedures.

    Replacement components are selected and matched with defective components and replaced in accordance with specified requirements.

    Safety equipment, procedures and correct environmental practices are followed before, during and after the maintenance and repair activities according to statutory and worksite requirements.

    Applicable tools and equipment are correctly used in terms of work site procedures.
