PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be able to use and apply nutritional principles in order to recommend nutritional guidelines for healthy eating associated with physical activity. Qualifying learners will be able to give informed advice on healthy eating to apparently healthy participants.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Describe the principles of healthy nutrition and regular eating patterns.
  • Give guidelines on nutrition principles for sport and exercise.
  • Provide information on the health-enhancing supplements and the role of ergogenic aids.

    Describe the principles of healthy nutrition and regular eating patterns. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A healthy diet that supports regular physical activity is explained focusing on the nutritional values of each type of foodstuff. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Foodstuff includes carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The benefits of following a sound eating plan are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Metabolism is explained in terms of eating patterns, weight gain and weight loss. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The role of exercise relative to energy expenditure and metabolism is explained focussing on weight loss, weight gain and muscle building. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Give guidelines on nutrition principles for sport and exercise.

    Macro and micro nutrients are defined and listed together with their purpose and function in the diet. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, trace elements, vitamins, water.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Guidelines are provided on the principles of nutrition for performance and a healthy lifestyle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The disadvantages of poor diet are explained in relation to performance and lifestyle. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Provide information on health-enhancing supplements and the role of ergogenic aids.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Health-enhancing supplements are defined and their various roles explained in the context of health promotion and sport performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ergogenic aids are defined and their roles explained in the context of sport performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A variety of health enhancing supplements are assessed for their purported benefits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Illegal sports performance enhancing drugs are identified and explained in terms of their detrimental effects on the body and the reason for their banning. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to herbal remedies, muscle builders, health shakes.
