PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be able to apply knowledge of the principles and methods of training when instructing exercise programmes. In addition the learner will be well positioned to extend his or her learning and practice to other areas where exercise science is applied to fitness training.

In particular, on completion of this unit standard, the learner is able to:
  • Define the principles of exercise training.
  • Explain methods of training for general fitness.
  • Apply principles and methods of training.

    Define the principles of exercise training. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The benefits of physical exercise are explained focusing on the harmful effects of a sedentary lifestyle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Physical fitness is defined in the context of health and wellness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The short term effect of exercise training as well as the long term physiological effects are explained focussing on the advantages of each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The basic principles of training are explained in the context of a fitness programme for healthy participants. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The principles of fitness training are explained in relation to frequency, intensity, duration and mode of exercise.

    Describe the methods of training.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A variety or methods of training are described for health related fitness. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to cardio respiratory fitness, strength, flexibility.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A variety or methods of training are described for sport related fitness. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to strength endurance, speed, power, agility.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply the principles and methods of training. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Methods of training for each type of exercise are described and demonstrated practically. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, muscular balance (posture, alignment). A minimum of two exercises are demonstrated for each training modality.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Correct technique is executed for each of the selected exercise training modalities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Breathing, positioning, alignment, range of motion, tempo, stability.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Warm up and cool down for each training modality are explained and demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Alternative methods are introduced for people who are unable to perform the required exercise in the required way due to personal problems such as age, deformity, injury, etc. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed against this unit standard (including through RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard, or assessing this unit standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
