PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to enable the correct operation and maintenance of appropriate communication equipment. The individual should develop competent communication etiquette. The sub-field should develop a standard approach to operating communication equipment and applying effective communication skills.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Describe correct communication etiquette procedures.
  • Describe and follow the procedure to be followed for equipment failure.
  • Use standard communication equipment correctly.

    On completion of this unit standard the learner should be ready to develop learning in further, more complex processes equipment-based communication measures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The need for communication etiquette is described in terms of effective communication and the need to respect other's dignity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The lines of communication in the organisation are described focusing on the need to follow procedures for effective handling of issues, problems, recommendations and requests. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Inter-departmental and inter-sectional communication channels and procedures are explained in terms of the need to follow protocol. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Understand the procedure to be followed for equipment failure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The procedure to be followed if communication equipment malfunctions is described with examples of good practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Malfunctioning communication equipment is reported promptly to the relevant person. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A detailed description of the malfunction is given to the relevant person.

    Use standard communication equipment correctly.

    Communication equipment is used effectively according to organisational etiquette, policy and procedure. The communication system is utilised in a professional and courteous manner ensuring that all procedures are followed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Communication equipment is looked after and stored away according to manufacturer's specifications and organisational policy and procedure. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed against this unit standard, including through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredit as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation; in terms of agreements reached around assessment and moderation between ETQA's (including professional bodies); and in terms of the moderation guideline detailed under point 4 immediately below.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies are specified otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.
