PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners within the Safety in Society and Sovereignty of the State sub-fields who work in the bomb disposal environment and who are required to dispose of mines, mine fields and booby traps. The unit standard will enable learners to render safe mines and booby traps. The competencies achieved by the learner in this Unit Standard will lead to a safer society for South African citizens.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Survey the area.
  • Detect and expose the mines and booby traps.
  • Explain the safe rendering of booby traps and hazards.

    It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.

    Survey the area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The affected area is surveyed using the appropriate equipment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Surveyed refers to the safety survey, survey level 1, 2 and 3 and technical survey.
  • Equipment includes but is not limited to compasses, maps and Global Positioning Systems.

    A plan/sketch is compiled for the surveyed area.

    The surveyed area is approached and marked according to the plan/sketch.

    An explanation is given as to the functioning of mine detection equipment according to its advantages and disadvantages.

    A description is given of methods to detect the physical location of mines and booby traps. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Mines and booby traps are detected using the mine detection equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Mines and booby traps are marked during the sweeping of the area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Mines and or booby traps are exposed while taking safety into account. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain the safe rendering of mines and booby traps.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The detected mine and or booby trap is identified according to its origin and the nature of the mine and or booby trap. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Additional hazards are identified and verified in line with Render Safe Procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An appreciation is made in terms of rendering the mine or booby trap safe while taking safety into account.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
