PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard is able to respond, under all conditions, in a tactical manner, to the provision of security response services to clients and others while observing legal prescripts and organisational procedures. Typical security response services will be the show of force in a designated area, reaction to a triggered alarm and performing auxiliary services such as escorting a client into their premises.

The qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Prepare for response duties.
  • Explain the factors that contribute towards service delivery.
  • Maintain a visible presence in designated area.
  • Respond to a variety of security related signals.
  • Perform auxiliary response services.

    It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:

    This unit standard applies to persons competently reacting, under all conditions and in a tactical manner to emergency signals and incidents.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare for response duties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment for response duties is prepared in terms of its availability, the service to be delivered and service circumstances. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Service circumstances may include but is not limited to weather conditions, time of day, specific instructions, previous tendencies and seasonal requirements.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An explanation is given of the safety requirements that must be met with regard to client and organisational needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the importance of customer and asset protection with regard to client needs and organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Knowledge of the designated and backup areas is obtained through a self orientation of the area. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Orientation of the area could be achieved by means of map reading, electronic devices and physical area patrols.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the factors that contribute towards service delivery. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of the practices that contribute towards response officer alertness and awareness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An explanation is given of observation techniques in order to maintain vigilance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the role of the responder in promoting the organisational image in the context of achieving client growth. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Maintain a visible presence in designated area. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Designated area must include but is not limited to commercial premises, industrial premises, public environmental and domestic sites. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Places and areas are identified that are prohibited from being entered while on duty. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Consistently high risk areas and hot spots are identified in order to make provision for the increased probability of risk and crime. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Consistently high risk areas include areas where special arrangements need to be made outside of the norm to ensure the safety of clients and employees.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the main principles that must be applied when identifying a stand-off point. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An explanation is given of the requirements that must be met when taking breaks. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Breaks may include but are not limited to using ablution facilities, refuelling, purchasing of refreshments and refresher breaks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Suspicious persons that may pose a threat are identified in terms of their behaviour, appearance and circumstances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Techniques of dealing with being accosted are demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    An explanation is given of the incidents that justify the leaving of a designated area and the procedure to be followed when doing so. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Respond to a variety of security related signals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A threat assessment is conducted on route and at the arrival of the source of the signal for a range of eventualities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Threat assessment must include but is not limited to behaviour of individuals on or in the vicinity of the source, telltale suspicious indicators, the nature of the client premises, the signal type, special instructions and extra ordinary circumstances.
  • Eventualities include but are not limited to the armed robbery, house break, assault, hijacking, a hostage situation, fire and medical situations.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The source of the signal is approach tactically by vehicle or on foot. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tactical approach includes but is not limited to the use of voice control, body language, observation, awareness and alertness.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Neutralising actions are initiated according to the type of eventuality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The crime scene is preserved in order to contribute towards the integrity of the evidence. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An explanation is given of the actions that must be applied when confronted by a violent animal. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Perform auxiliary response services. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Auxiliary services include but are not limited to client/public escorts, client rendezvous services, holiday checks and courtesy calls. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The procedures for providing auxiliary services are followed in terms of organisational specific standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An explanation is given of the procedure to be followed in the event of an incident resulting in a breach of security. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The procedure may include but is not limited to reporting the need for a static security officer, trauma counselling, replacing broken windows or doors and a locksmith.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
