PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will have a fundamental understanding of the concepts and applications of Air Power, the principles of flight and of aircraft recognition. Learners will also appreciate the history and the organisation and force design of the South African Air Force. Learners will be able to utilize the content of specific outcomes in the context of operations where Air Power is required.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining fundamental aviation terms and principles.
  • Describing the evolution of Air Power.
  • Explaining the basics and characteristics of Air Power.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Common aviation terminology is defined with reference to the emerging development of Air Power over time. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Common aviation technology may include but is not limited to a fundamental knowledge of the genesis of flight and use of the aircraft and/or ability to fly for the purpose of its use in air operations up to the present century.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An explanation is given of the fundamental principles of flight with reference to the concept of aerodynamics. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principles of flight may include the forces acting on an aircraft in flight, axes of flight, flight control surfaces, aircraft attitudes and speed.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the principles of aircraft recognition in order to identify different types of aircraft.

    Describe the evolution of Air Power.
