PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals entering the pharmaceutical field and/or related fields. Individuals credited with this standard will have a clear understanding of medicine as it affects the human body and will be able to identify common conditions and ailments. In addition they will be able to provide information relating to health and medicines within their scope of practice.

    The systems of the human body are anatomically described.

    The physiological functions of the systems of the human body are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The body's basic defence to external and environmental stimuli is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The expected actions of medicines on the body are described at an elementary level. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The interaction of the individual's body with medicines is described and adverse reactions to medicines are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe common conditions and minor ailments. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Common conditions which affect health within the local community are identified and described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Common health conditions include TB, HIV/AIDS, malaria, waterborne diseases, asthma, emphysema, cardiac conditions, bronchitis, and environmental hazards.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Common minor ailments are identified and described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Common minor ailments include conditions such as diarrhoea, vomiting, coughs and colds, first aid related.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Clients with special requirements are identified and examples are given. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Special requirements include pregnancy, breastfeeding, sport, old age, infirmity, infancy, porphyria.

    Provide information to promote health.

    The effect of the scope of practice on the provision of information is explained indicating what is and what isn't allowed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Interventions to address the identified common health conditions and minor ailments are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effect of special requirements on the planned intervention is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Appropriate information is elicited from a client. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Health information and products provided are in line with the Scope of Practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Health information and products include lifestyle, nutrition, hygiene, scheduled and complementary medicines.

    The client is referred to the relevant professional or service when information or products are beyond the limitations of the Scope of Practice.
