PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be able to take chemical, bacteriological and micro-biological samples for process monitoring and investigative purposes. Learners will be able to interpret data collected at various locations in order to determine the status of the different parts of the process, understand the meaning of data to optimize the process. The unit standard will expand the skills base of the qualifying learner and make the person more effective in his/her tasks and more employable which will open up job opportunities in related fields. This competence will enable the learner to undertake water and wastewater quality sampling in various water environments. This will ensure that the water resources are accurately monitored in terms of water and wastewater quality.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Plan the collection of investigative samples.
  • Undertake gas sampling.
  • Undertake solid sampling.
  • Undertake depth sampling.
  • Maintain sample logs.
  • Interpret results received from laboratory.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Samples:
  • Water, final effluent, river, industrial effluent, potable water, seepage sludge, gas, borehole water,in-plant streams.

    Sampling techniques:
  • Depth, gas, solids etc.

    Observations:
  • Litter, odour, colour, weather, flow, vegetation disturbance and wind direction.

    Plant:
  • Complete plant or section of the plant.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The nature of the problem or investigation is explained in order to identify the required samples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The samples to be collected are identified and the analysis required is explained to justify the investigation procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Correct labeling procedure is explained in order to reflect the type of sample and analysis required. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Undertake gas sampling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The types and physical characteristics of the gas to be sampled and safety considerations are explained in order to determine an appropriate sample to be taken. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of gas refers to but is not limited to methane, hydrogen sulphur, carbon-dioxide, oxygen and chlorine.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Gas sampling apparatus are identified and explained in order to meet the types of gas to be sampled. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sample apparatus include but is not limited to portable gas sampling apparatus, bladder and gas pipette.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Specific safety requirements are identified and discussed in order to protect the personal safety of the sampler. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Specific safety requirements refers to but is not limited to inflammable, toxic and non life supporting gas.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Sampling is demonstrated by means of taking a sample from an anaerobic digester in order to ensure adherence to safety requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Undertake solid sampling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The nature and physical characteristics of the solids to be sampled and hygiene considerations are explained in order to determine an appropriate sample to be taken. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The nature of solids refers to but is not limited to chemicals such as lime, alum, treated sludges, compost, detritus and screenings.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Specific hygiene requirements are discussed in order to ensure the personal safety of the sampler. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Sampling is demonstrated by means of taking a sample from a dewatering devices or bulk chemical container. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Undertake depth sampling.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons to take depth samples are identified and explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Examples include but is not limited to stratification of reservoirs, anaerobic digesters, reactors.

    Different types of sampling apparatus are identified and described by means of sketches. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety considerations are explained in order to ensure safety when undertaking sampling. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety considerations include but is not limited to hygiene practices, elevated sampling positions and engulfment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Sampling is carried out in accordance with organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Borehole sampling procedure is described in relation to obtaining a representative sample.

    Observations at sampling point are recorded in terms of their value in determining the condition of the sample.

    Observations are reported to relevant person to determine further action to be taken.

    Sample number, date, time, and location are recorded for the identification of samples.

    Sample results are tracked in order to make a follow-up.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.

    This unit standard replaces unit standard 12067, "Take investigative samples for monitoring process", Level 4, 8 credits.

    Integrated Assessment:

    When conducting assessments, assessors must ensure that they are familiar with the full text of the unit standards being assessed. Assessors must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge by developing assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the learners are working. These activities and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment. It may be more effective and efficient to assess a number of unit standards together in an integrated way, thus reducing the overall number of assessments and ensuring that commonalities that exist between a number of unit standards are captured in a way that makes sense for assessment.
