PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The person credited with this unit standard is able to understand track standards in relation to the class of line and interpret reports to determine any further action which may need to be taken. Learners will also be able to actions required for deviations according to set parameters. Learners will also be in a position to understand the actions required to deal with any and all deviations and what resources and measures are required to deal effectively and efficiently with each deviation.
The qualifying learner is capable of: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
Learners accessing this qualification will be assumed competent in:

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Demonstrate an understanding of the terminology of track geometry reports. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The layout of a strip chart is described in terms of headings and events. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The parameters on a strip chart are identified and described in accordance with industry specific definitions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Parameters may include but are not limited to vertical alignment, twist, super elevation, gauge, horizontal alignment. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The scaling of the data on a strip chart is applied in order to determine the magnitude and location of the deviation. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Track standards are explained in accordance with laid down specifications. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Track standards may include but are not limited to parameters, thresholds, fixed points, and vehicle structure gauge. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Assess track conditions from reports in order to determine the extent and location of immediate priorities. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Reports may include but are not limited to strip charts, written reports, electronic copies, exception reports, track quality index, ADA II. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Reports are interpreted in order to determine the extent and location of immediate priorities. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Extracted information is prioritised in terms of the extent of the deviation. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The effects of deviations are explained with examples. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Deviations are prioritised by applying the set parameters. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Locate immediate priority/ies on track. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The methods of locating immediate priorities on track are described by using strip chart features. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The physical location of the deviation is pointed out in a given scenario. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The magnitude of the deviation is determined by using standard measurement procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The cause of the deviation is determined in order to establish possible resource requirements. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Determine the resource requirements to rectify deviations. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Resource requirements may include but are not limited to labour, material, cost machines, and equipment. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Local conditions which may have an impact on rectification actions are described in order to optimise resources. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Local conditions may include security situation, access to worksite, type and number of lines and communication availability. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Resource requirements are identified to match each individual deviation. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Emergency measures which must be taken are explained when resources are not immediately available. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Time frames of the repairs are explained in terms of different types of repair. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
