PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to take all relevant practical steps necessary to ensure the safety of participants taking part in life guarding competitions. He/she will assemble, manage and motivate a safety team who will work in close collaboration with other members of the organisational framework. The qualifying learner is expected to perform the necessary functions with responsibility, efficiency and insight.

The training of a sufficient number of lifeguards to perform the function of ensuring safety at competitions should make such competitions more effective and therefore attractive to greater numbers of participants. The improvement of skill that can be expected to result from the competitive environment will benefit the sports and recreation sub-fields greatly as the public enjoys the benefits of improved performance.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Site the competition area to maximise safety.
  • Determine, assemble and ensure manpower and equipment sufficient for the safety squad.
  • Use appropriate methods and lines of communication between the safety squad, competition officials and hosting committee.
  • Access external services as necessary and establish close communications.
  • Manage any environmental effects on the running of the competition.
  • Analyse the performance of the safety squad and participate in the recommendation of changes that could lead to improvements.

    The potential hazards that could affect the location of the competition area are identified and understood. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Aspects of general water awareness and quality that are taken into account when deciding the location of the competition area are explained using examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The competition site is selected to the satisfaction of major stakeholders. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Determine, assemble and ensure manpower and equipment sufficient for the safety squad.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The effects that the various items on the competition programme have in determining the logistics of the safety squad are analysed and explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect that the number and age of the competitors have on the composition and disposition of the safety squad is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The safety squad and necessary equipment are assembled and located strategically.

    Use appropriate methods and lines of communication between the safety squad, competition officials and hosting committee.

    The various communication methods available are discussed focussing on their merits and demerits (depending on differing or changing circumstances).

    The roles of the safety squad, competition officials and hosting committee in the process of ensuring the safety of the competition participants is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A schedule identifying effective lines and means of communication to be employed between the safety squad, competition officials and hosting committee is designed and used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The established lines of communication are used effectively during the competition.

    Access external services as necessary and establish close communications.

    Means for determining the need for external services at a competition is explained.

    A detailed list of external services to be employed, together with related information and description of how they will fit into the rescue network, is drawn up.

    A list of environmental challenges is drawn up, with explanations of how they could affect the competition and the changes in strategy that would then be employed for the safety of the participants.

    An exception report which will contain a report of the incident and an analysis of the area(s) of non-conformance is designed and used.
