PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to take all relevant practical steps necessary to control the activities of a lifeguarding duty squad so as to ensure its maximum efficiency. He/she will assemble, manage, organise and motivate the duty squad. In doing so, he/she will liaise with all role-players who might affect the services provided, in an endeavour to ensure optimum working conditions. The training of a sufficient number of lifeguards to perform the function of ensuring optimum functioning of duty squads will render lifeguarding services most effective, to the benefit of the public. This in turn can be expected to benefit the sub-field greatly.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:

Explain the need to control the lifeguard squad and liaise with the municipal authorities.

Identify the needs, limitations, interests and expectations of the duty squad and municipal authorities.

Play a leadership role with the duty squad, municipal authorities and members of the public.

Maintain the operational standards of the squad.

The need for good public relations in the working environment is detailed with reference to lifeguarding.

The need to have an efficient, well co-coordinated duty squad who will work optimally in a rescue situation is explained and demonstrated in the lifeguarding context.

The approval of the municipality for the site situation of the squad, their duty hours, and the manpower required is sought and the need for this outlined.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

An individual wishing to be assessed against this Unit Standard (including through RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.

Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.

Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard, or assessing this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
