PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard in combination with will be able to link pipes, pipefittings and pipelines devices in accordance with industry code of practice This competence will enhance the ability of learners to contribute to ensuring that teamwork is more effective in workplaces, as well as contribute to transforming workplaces into sites of learning. This competence will minimise water losses and disruptions on reticulation systems through leaks and other faults and will contribute towards the effective and efficient operations of sustainable water services to communities. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Knowledge of pipes, assocciated fittings, valves and meters. Read and interpret maps and engineering drawings. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Pipes of dissimilar and similar specifications (material and size).
  • Pipes HDPE, Fibre Cement, uPVC, steel, stainless steel, cast iron, galvanised iron, copper, concrete, GRP, mPVC, Polypropylene.
  • Associated fittings Bends, elbows, Tee pieces, Y pieces, all valves, meters, hydrants, jointing fittings, repair couplings.
  • Valves: Flow control valves, pressure sustaining valves, air-relief valves, pressure relief valves, pressure reducing valves, back-flow preventers, non-return valves, reflux valves.
  • Water meters: Combination water meter, spiral, turbine, magnetic, electro-magnetic, piston, jet, psm, ultra-sonic.
  • Safety equipment: Gloves, goggles, overalls, boots, mask, earplugs, helmet, torch, breathing aids, gum boots.
  • Tools and equipment: All prescribed tools associated with tasks.
  • Legislation: Current and relevant occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Records/Reports: Time sheets, log books, accident reports, injury reports, incident reports, daily meter reading data, job cards.
  • Work procedures: Best operating procedures as laid down in terms of organisational policies. Legislation includes but is not limited to Occupational, Health and Safety Act no 85 of 1993.

    This unit standard replaces unit standard 14017, "Join pipes fittings and other pipeline devices", Level 3, 7 credits.

    When conducting assessments, assessors must ensure that they are familiar with the full text of the unit standards being assessed. Assessors must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge by developing assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the learners are working. These activities and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment. It may be more effective and efficient to assess a number of unit standards together in an integrated way, thus reducing the overall number of assessments and ensuring that commonalities that exist between a number of unit standards are captured in a way that makes sense for assessment.
