PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals involved in the management of indigenous plants within nature conservation areas and other natural environments. Learners involved in law enforcement and environmental compliance will also derive benefit. Learners qualifying against this unit standard will be able to interpret the plant environment, the use of indigenous plants and to assist in managing the flora within a protected area.

The qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Identify indigenous plants and their uses.
  • Identify protected Indigenous plants within the operational area.

    It is assumed that the learner is competent in:

    Available resources are used to identify and describe the indigenous plants found within the protected area/operational area.

    Threatened indigenous plants present in the operational area are identified and listed.

    Key indigenous plants in the operational area are identified and listed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The most important plant parts and their functions in the operational environment is identified and listed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The ways in which indigenous plants are utilised within and/or external to the protected area is identified and explained.

  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.

  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
