PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to remove impurities in diamond gemstones through boiling.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the equipment, tools and chemicals used to boil diamond gemstones.
  • Prepare to boil diamond gemstones.
  • Boil diamond gemstones.
  • Conduct post-boiling cleaning, checking and security activities.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector, particularly in the aspect of beneficiation.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of the diamond processing industry in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • Use a loupe to examine a diamond gemstone.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    This unit standard applies to a person required to remove impurities by boiling any diamond gemstones under minimal supervision. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the equipment, tools and chemicals used to boil diamond gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The equipment and tools and chemicals used for boiling diamond gemstones are identified and their use is described in terms of key features, applications and methods for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The safety, health and environmental protection equipment for boiling activities are identified and their purpose explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The handling of equipment and chemicals are described in terms of safety, use of protective equipment and hazards of pressure boiling. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The hazards must include:
  • Handling of chemicals.
  • Inhalation of fumes.
  • Heating methods.
  • Ventilation.
  • Handling hot equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Practices are explained to maintain good housekeeping, safety in the workplace, protective equipment, and care from spillage, fumes and eyes and care of equipment in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequence of deviating from workplace specific practices are described in terms of potential impact on health, safety, equipment, products and productivity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to boil diamond gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and applied according to required standards of occupational health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The equipment to be used is checked to be clean and in good working order. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Chemicals to be used are removed from storage area and distilled into suitable dispensing containers in readiness for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Diamond gemstones to be boiled are extracted from the parcel, are kept separate from other diamonds and instructions are checked against preparation of equipment and chemicals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The appropriate chemicals are selected and dispensed according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Fumigation equipment is checked and procedures are activated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Boil diamond gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The equipment is filled with the appropriate solutions and heated according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    When the required temperature and operating conditions are reached, the diamonds to be boiled are inserted according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The diamonds are boiled at the required temperature and for the required time to defined standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Defined standards will be found in the employer's:

  • Parcel instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Diamonds are inspected, where appropriate, to determine whether the boiling has achieved the object of cleaning or removing impurities. Where appropriate diamonds may be boiled for longer periods, or subjected to further chemical treatment, according to workplace procedures and instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Equipment is monitored during boiling to ensure the correct temperature is maintained and that no leaks occur. Remedial action is taken in accordance with workplace specific instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The vessels are frequently checked for any leaks, fumes or defects during the boiling process. Remedial action is taken, where necessary, according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Fumigation equipment is frequently checked for correct functioning and any defects are dealt with in accordance with workplace health and safety procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Conduct post boiling cleaning, checking and security activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment is removed from heating processes and allowed to cool down before the removal of diamonds in accordance with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Heat sources are turned off or made secure according to workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Diamond gemstones are removed from equipment after boiling, cleaned, inspected and kept separate from other diamonds, in accordance with workplace specifications. Remedial action, where necessary, is taken in line with workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Good housekeeping is exercised after boiling. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • Checking protective clothing and equipment after use.
  • Safe handling of diamonds after boiling.
  • Clean equipment and machinery.
  • Storage of hazardous chemicals.
  • Safe disposal of chemicals and solutions after boiling.
  • Replace equipment into correct storage facilities.
  • Maintenance of personal protective clothing and equipment.

    Diamond gemstones are accounted for after boiling in accordance with the workplace security system.

    The chemicals used may differ from workplace to workplace and the formula used may be a trade secret. This has to be respected, but the candidate must be aware of the hazards and the properties of the solutions used to boil the gemstones in.
