PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to set diamond gemstones in press pots for polishing. This process is known as setting.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Describe the use of the different sizes and depth of press pots for polishing.
  • Explain the implications for setting of a diamond gemstone.
  • Set diamond gemstones into appropriate pots.
  • Conduct post-setting cleaning, checking and security activities.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector, particularly in the aspect of beneficiation.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    This unit standard applies to persons setting uncomplicated sawn and/or makeable diamond gemstones under general supervision, or where the person performing the activity deals with complicated sawn and/or makeable diamond gemstones only under close direction of a supervisor. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the use of the different sizes and depth of press pots for polishing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different press pots and their components used to polish diamond gemstones are identified and their uses in different applications are explained in terms of key features, applications and method of use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Practices are explained to maintain good housekeeping, safety and security in the workplace and care of press pot systems in line with workplace specific requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Security of diamonds must include:
  • Safeguarding of stones.
  • Allocation of stones received to the correct parcels.

    The consequences of deviating from workplace specific practices are described in terms of potential impact on health, safety, equipment, products and productivity. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Deviations from workplace specific practices must include:
  • Incorrect size of pot.
  • Incorrect depth of pot.

    Explain the implications for setting of diamond gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The naturals and girdle are identified and the position of gemstones when set in the pot is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The implications of incorrect setting are explained in terms of types of problems that can be encountered, key features, impact on polishing and methods to avoid such problems. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The types of problems that can be encountered must include:
  • Incorrect size of press pot.
  • Incorrect depth of press pot.
  • Shavings on platform of the press pot.
  • Setting incorrect for naturals.
  • Bad bruting (girdle not 90º to table).
  • Incorrect table size.
  • Excess pressure.

    Appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and applied according to required standards of occupational health and safety.

    Stones are set in appropriate press pots for polishing according to workplace specific setting standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Setting hints and techniques are explained in terms of different applications and the consequences of using inappropriate setting procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stones that have been set are checked for correct setting and remedial action, where necessary, is taken in line with workplace specific operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Press pots are checked for any defects during the setting process. Remedial action is taken in line with workplace specific operating procedures.

    Conduct post-setting cleaning, checking and security activities.

    Diamond gemstones are removed from press pots without damage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Good housekeeping is exercised after removal of diamond gemstones from press pots.

    Good housekeeping must include:
  • Clean work area.
  • Clean workbench.
  • Replace collars into correct storage facilities.
  • Dispose of used press pots in appropriate facility.
  • Maintenance of personal protective clothing and equipment.

    Diamond gemstones are accounted for during and after setting or removal from press pots in terms of workplace security systems.
