PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will contribute to the qualitative development of learners by providing skills and knowledge on guiding communities towards the establishment of sustainable community structures.

The learner will be able to relate to the different needs and sentiments of a specific community as it relates to extension. In addition the learner will be well positioned to extend their learning and practice into other areas of extension or management and practice at higher levels.

The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to:
  • Articulate the development/evolution of extension approaches.
  • Assess, analyse and interpret situations for which extension approaches would be selected in a simple setting with supervision.
  • Understand, select and apply appropriate extension approaches for varied situations in a simple setting with supervision.
  • Understand, select and apply the essential extension tools with supervision.
  • Engage with assessment/evaluation of extension approaches.
  • Create a foundation for effective extension delivery. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners should have the following in place:
  • Basic understanding of what extension is.
  • Basic understanding of the principles and purposes of extension.
  • Basic understanding of the range of extension approaches.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Extension approaches are identified and described showing the principles and purposes of each approach and the overall evolution and development of extension. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The situations for which each approach is relevant are identified, described and explained showing the outcomes each approach facilitates. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The approaches are compared to show the advantages/disadvantages and the similarities/differences of each approach. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify and select appropriate extension approaches for varied situations in a simple setting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An extension intervention is designed using extension approaches and tools that can be shown to be appropriate for a verified situation that has been analysed in accordance with 'good practice'. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Expected outcomes, indicators for measuring impact and means of verification of the intervention are identified and explained showing how the verified situation will be improved. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of selection an inappropriate approach are explained in the context of the verified situation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply extension interventions within a single work area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Processes and systems to implement the intervention are established within the operational standards of the extension unit/organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Resources needed to implement the intervention are acquired and mobilised within the operational standards of the extension unit/organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Performance is monitored and measured in accordance with project procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Preventative and/or corrective actions are developed and implemented to realign the intervention to accommodate changes in the situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Records relevant to the intervention are kept in the required formats and places and are current, complete, and concise.

    Evaluate the application of the extension intervention within a single work area.

    An appropriate instrument is designed to evaluate the extension intervention in compliance with the intended outcomes and 'good practice'. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Relevant data is collected, organised and assessed and interpreted against indicators given in the plan so that actual outcomes are compared to intended outcomes and variances are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Conclusions and recommendations are formulated and defended in transparent consultation with the relevant stakeholders.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed, (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
