PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for supervisors or managers who quality assure the polygraph examinations conducted by other polygraphers to ensure the reliability of the process and the validity of the test.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Assessing the validity of a polygraph examination process.
  • Evaluating a polygraph examination.
  • Verifying the findings of a polygraph examination.
  • Providing a professional opinion on the validity and reliability of a polygraph examination. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is the quality assurance of polygraph examinations by a supervisor or manager:
  • Polygraph examination refers to the complete polygraph process.
  • Test refers to the administration of specific questionnaires as part of the polygraph process.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Assess the validity of a polygraph examination process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The processes followed are checked for alignment to accepted industry procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Deviations in the process are identified and a judgement is made as to whether the deviation materially affected the outcome of the result. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Evaluate a polygraph examination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The choice of format and formulation of relevant and comparison questions are evaluated against a selected theory of test construction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The questions are compared for relevance against the facts of the case and the purpose of the examination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The quality of the recorded tracings is analysed and checked against accepted industry standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Verify the findings of a polygraph examination.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Knowledge of polygraph analysis is applied to evaluate the results obtained by the examiner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Suggestions are made to rectify any inaccuracies and minimise human error. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Provide an informed opinion on the validity and reliability of a polygraph examination.

    Observations about the process and examination are integrated in a report. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An opinion on the validity of the assessed examination is expressed and substantiated to provide feedback to relevant parties.

    Anyone assessing a candidate against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.

    Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.

    Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.
