PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The purpose of the learning is to develop the competence of scheduling project activities in order to complete projects according to the agreed timelines. Credited learners can schedule realistically and profitably and thereby avoid wastage for both the organisation and the customer. Learners develop competence at judging the relative strengths and weaknesses of different options in the application of alternative resources and selecting the best option in relation to project requirements. This contributes to learners developing entrepreneurial competence.
The effective application of resources, in particular highly skilled and scarce human resources, is essential to any organisation's success. The competence of scheduling is generic and learners can apply it in all contexts. Prompt delivery of products and services improves customer satisfaction and impacts positively on the image of the publishing industry. Credited learners are capable of: |

The credits and level assigned to this unit standard is based on the assumption that learners have already attained the following competencies:
|
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
This unit standard must be achieved in one area of responsibility of publishing, editing, marketing, design or production. Range statements are included with the relevant specific outcomes and assessment criteria where appropriate. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Identify production steps required to achieve project outcomes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Production requirements are identified for all specified project outcomes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Project specifications are analysed according to budget requirements and production processes in own areas of responsibility. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Production steps are described to meet project requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Identified production steps are verified against organisational procedures. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Specify order of production process steps. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Each identified production step is analysed in terms of its resource requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Critical dates are identified that would ensure delivery of project outputs on agreed deadlines. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Interdependent production steps are identified that impact concurrently on resources and project deliverables. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Interdependent steps depend on one another for successful progress to next steps. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Production steps are sequenced and coordinated to meet project requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Sequence is determined by interdependence of processes; concurrent processes. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Determine timeframes for activities relating to schedules. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Each identified production step is analysed in terms of its expected time requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The time requirements of each step are evaluated against project requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Adaptations are made to identified time requirements and resource allocation. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Adaptations are communicated in specified formats to all relevant persons. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Formulate templates to monitor progress of projects. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Templates are designed that reflect resource and time allocation, project requirements and sequencing of production steps. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Criteria are identified to determine progress against project goals. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Procedures are described to measure progress against project goals. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Templates are verified against organisational procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Templates are communicated to all relevant persons. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 |
Formulate contingency plans to address implementation risks. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Contingencies are identified to ensure the achievement of project goals. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Contingencies would hamper achievement of project goals if allowed to continue unchecked. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The possible effects of contingencies are evaluated against the project goals. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Alternative scenarios are drafted to solve critical disruptions in schedules. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Best solutions are selected in terms of given project requirements. |

Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO): |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING |
Identify and solve problems where responses to problems show that such critical and creative thinking has been used to make responsible decisions when production steps are described to meet project requirements, critical dates are identified that would ensure delivery of project outputs on agreed deadlines, production steps are sequenced to meet project requirements, adaptations are made to identified time requirements and resource allocation, contingencies are identified to ensure the achievement of project goals, and alternative scenarios are drafted to solve critical disruptions in schedules. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING |
Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation or community when identified production steps and templates are verified against organisational procedures. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING |
Organise and manage oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively when production steps are coordinated to meet project requirements. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING |
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information when project specifications are analysed according to budget requirements and production processes in own areas of responsibility, each identified production step is analysed in terms of its resource requirements, each identified production step is analysed in terms of its expected time requirements, criteria are identified to determine progress against project goals, procedures are described to measure progress against project goals, and templates are designed that reflect resource and time allocation, project requirements and sequencing of production steps. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING |
Communicate effectively using visual, mathematic and/or language skills in the modes of oral and/or written presentation when adaptations are communicated in specified formats to all relevant persons, and templates are communicated to all relevant persons. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE |
Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING |
Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation when production requirements are identified for all specified project outcomes, interdependent production steps are identified that impact concurrently on resources and project deliverables, the time requirements of each step are evaluated against project requirements, the possible effects of contingencies are evaluated against the project goals, and best solutions are selected in terms of given project requirements. |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
