PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard focuses on the field of gas system installations and is aimed at ensuring that the learner has all the competencies required to perform gas installations without supervision.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Plan the installation.
  • Liaise with third parties.
  • Prepare for the installation.
  • Conduct the installation.
  • Complete post-installation functions.
  • Commission the installation and complete required paperwork.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

    Learners must be competent in the following Unit Standards:
  • Design a gas installation (NQF Level 3).
  • Relevant "jointing" unit standards namely:
    > US 119753 Perform basic welding/ joining of metals.
    > US 114669 Carry out basic electric arc welding in an electrical environment.
    > US 14684 Weld thermoplastics with electro-fusion equipment.

    The typical context of this unit standard assumes an existing or new domestic or commercial gas installation site.

    The typical scope of this unit standard includes one of the following but is not limited to:
  • LPG installations.
  • Natural gas installations.

    Plan the installation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Design drawings, job card, bill of materials and any other information pertaining to the installation are obtained and interpreted in terms of their implication on performing an installation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All information is clarified with relevant parties in terms of its impact on the installation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Information requiring clarification may include drawings, bill of materials, specifications, location, on-site conditions, third party involvement, customer requirements and any uncertainties that may exist.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A basic installation plan is compiled based on specific job requirements and company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Lists of supporting staff, transportation and other resources required for the installation are compiled according to the requirements of the job. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Availability of tools and equipment required to complete the installation are verified based on the job requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Availability of materials and consumables required to complete the installation are verified based on the job requirements.

    All resources and activities required for the installation are timeously scheduled and communicated to the relevant parties.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All documentation to initiate installation is completed, submitted and finalised with relevant authorities as per requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety permissions for starting the installation are obtained as per customer- and legal requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Permissions to be obtained may include but are not limited to those stipulated by national regulations, specific local authority, fire brigade, customer, building owner and building contractor.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Permission or permit to work from the client or other relevant authority is obtained to enter premises and start installation as stipulated by contractual requirements or workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Any deviations from the original design or problems experienced during the installation which may impact on the agreed upon specifications or safety of the system are documented and submitted to relevant authorities for verification as per specified procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Client, inspection authorities and other relevant parties are familiarised with installation and safe operating requirements as per customer- and legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Final installation documentation is prepared and signed-off by all relevant parties as per relevant procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The design is verified and site conditions are evaluated to establish any special requirements by doing an on-site evaluation in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Materials and consumables are obtained based on the bill of materials and on-site conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) required to complete the installation are obtained and verified as indicated in the installation plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment, materials, consumables and support staff are loaded and transported to the worksite in adherence of road safety regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Equipment, materials and consumables are off-loaded and stored using company installation and safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The workplace/installation site is prepared for the installation in accordance with installation procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Conduct the installation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety and housekeeping is maintained during the full installation process by adhering to the safety requirements of the customer, authorities, local- and national bodies as well as own workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Work area is measured and marked-off in accordance with the stipulated system design. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Excavations are prepared and scaffolding erected in accordance to safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Piping is measured, cut and routed in accordance with the prepared design, actual site conditions and within the requirements of the national standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Equipment is placed, assembled, mounted and secured according to technical and national specification requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Storage equipment is connected according to the requirements of the national standards.

    Complete post-installation functions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Corrosion protection measures are implemented in accordance with design specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Corrosion protection may include but is not limited to painting, wrapping, protective sleeve and applying cathodic protection.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    System colour coding requirements are applied as specified in design or customer agreement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The site is returned to its original condition in terms of filling excavations, removing waste, filling gaps, repairing damaged areas and painting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tools and scaffolding are removed and remaining equipment, materials and consumables are loaded for transport back to the workplace in accordance with relevant procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Commission the installation and complete required documentation.

    System is purged in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    Leak and pressure-testing of equipment is conducted according to the approved acceptance test procedure.
