PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard will be useful for people who have completed the introductory courses to warship safety management and bridge watch-keeping within a naval context, and wish to progress as officers within a sub-surface environment. This standard will give them the opportunity to develop and balance their practical skills with the essential knowledge needed to use a range of detection equipment to identify targets, an essential part of the competence required to earn a formal qualification in Submarine Bridge Watchkeeping.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
|
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Demonstrate knowledge of the tactical management system components. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Tactical management system components are located and identified, and an explanation of their purpose is consistent with standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
System components include ISUS 90; ESM equipment and mast; radar masts, sonar sensors and screens. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The integration between system components is explained with reference to creating a tactical picture and the necessity of utilising all sensors optimally is highlighted. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
All equipment and systems are checked and confirmed to be operational and ready for use. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Detect, classify and identify sonar targets. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Explanations are given concerning the detection and identification of targets using sonar equipment is consistent with manufacturer's specifications and sonar principles. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Explanations of the effects of sound propagation under various environmental conditions emphasise the importance of underwater noise reduction. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Environmental conditions include water temperature, density, salinity and depth. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The functioning and purpose of active and passive sonar systems on board a submarine is explained and examples provided of situations in which each system will be utilised. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Commands given to sonar station operators are clear, concise and correct according to naval terminology. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Sonar information necessitated by the immediate situation is extracted from the appropriate sonar stations, transmitted to the tactical management system and utilised correctly to identify and classify sonar targets. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
Reports collated on identified targets are coherent, to the point and submitted to the Captain within a degree of urgency appropriate to the situation. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Create and maintain a situation picture using radar. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The capabilities and limitations of radar equipment is explained and demonstrated in line with their design specifications. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Equipment includes radar mast, radar console, hydraulic equipment, electronic warfare mast. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Radar console is operated in a manner that facilitates optimum gathering of radar information and reporting of radar contacts. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Intercepted radar signals are interpreted and plotted accurately and transmitted to the tactical management system. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Commands given to radar operators are clearing, accurate and in line with radar control terminology. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Radar transmissions are explained in terms of factors affecting the safety of the vessel. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
