This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard. |
PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard will be useful for people who have completed the introductory courses to warship safety management and bridge watch keping (submarines) within a naval context, and wish to progress as officers within a sub-surface environment.
This unit standard will give them the opportunity to develop and balance their practical skills with the essential knowledge needed to earn a formal qualification in Submarine Operations Management. More specifically, it provides for the recognition of the knowledge to work safely with torpedoes, and deploy them effectively. People credited with this unit standard are able to: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
It is assumed that learners are competent in Communications at NQF Level 4 and that they have successfully completed the, "Orientation to submarine services in the SAN." programme. |
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Locate and identify torpedo system components. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Torpedo system components are located and identified correctly in terms of their positioning on weapons system drawings. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The purpose of torpedo system components are explained according to the manufacturer's specifications. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
All equipment and systems are checked and ensured to be operational and ready for deployment. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Torpedo system components include:
|
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Different modes for operating and firing the torpedoes are described according to their design specifications. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Modes for torpedo operation include:
|
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
The key differences between exercise and combat torpedoes are described with reference to their design and purpose in the submarine weapons system. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
The capabilities and limitations of torpedo weapon systems are explained and described with reference to distance, accuracy, speed and explosive force, in line with manufacturer's specifications. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 |
Conditions favourable to torpedo deployment are listed and examples given illustrate the context in which torpedoes are successfully deployed. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 |
Conditions unfavourable to torpedo deployment are described and examples given illustrate the context in which weapons deployment are aborted. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Prepare to deploy torpedoes under operational conditions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Tactical information gathered from the appropriate stations is accurate and confirms the viability of the selected firing option. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Safety markings and tags on equipment are inspected and confirmed to be current. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Safety checks and inspections on torpedo system components are conducted in a manner that ensures safe torpedo deployment and a favourable launch. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
System components include:
|
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Torpedoes are armed and loaded into torpedo tubes according to standard operating procedures, and in line with established safety precautions. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Fire the torpedo. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Information presented to Command provides an accurate picture of the target, relative speeds, and firing options and enables effective decision-aking with respect to firing the torpedo. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Commands to fire the torpedo are confirmed according to establish operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Commands are given for firing of torpedoes are clearly, concisely and correctly according to naval terminology. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Lines of communication with the operations room are maintained to ensure personnel are kept up to date and aware of the overall situation. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Safety of personnel and the vessel is maintained at all times. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Track and report on torpedo deployment. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Information on the run of the torpedo is gathered form the appropriate stations and equipment and analysed accurately. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Commentary on the run provides a clear and accurate picture of the track in relation to selected firing option. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Deviant torpedoes or misses are noted, reported and new options developed and presented in line with the command priority. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Debriefing sessions on the firing of torpedoes are conducted in a positive and constructive manner, and information gathered is collated to support continuous improvement. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Own role is evaluated for impact on the torpedo firing, and the contribution to accurate and successful deployment. |
