PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit will enable learners to differentiate between natural, man-made and bomb damage for a variety of purposes. Learners will have a fundamental understanding of the effects of damage on different environments. Learners will be able to determine the degree of damage pertaining to structures, nature and infrastructure.

Qualifying learners will be able to:
  • Analyse bomb damage for image analysis purposes.
  • Analyse natural damage for image analysis purposes.
  • Analyse man-made damage for image analysis purposes.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Communication, at NQF Level 4.
  • Mathematics, at NQF Level 4.
  • Apply map and related spatial information skill for decision making in the workplace, Level 4.
  • Plan and conduct research, Level 4.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Analyse bomb damage for image analysis purposes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Bomb damage is described using organisational specific terminology.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Categories of bomb damage are explained in terms of their characteristics.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
  • Categories refer to but are not limited to effective damage, severity of damage, roof disturbance.
  • Characteristics refer to but are not limited to centres of damage, craters, roof damage and framework damage.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Damage to the target is evaluated to determine the intensity of bomb damage.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Bomb damage refers to but is not limited to primary damage, secondary damage and causes of damage.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Possible targets are analysed to determine their vulnerability.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Vulnerability refers to but is not limited to marshalling yards, bridges, roads, tunnels and ports and harbours, Desired Mean Point of Impact.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Possible targets are analysed to determine the desired level of damage required.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
A bomb damage assessment report is collated by comparing pre- and post-strike imagery.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Report refers to but is not limited to post-strike report and ground-strike report.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Analyse natural damage for image analysis purposes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The destruction caused by a particular phenomenon is determined in a given situation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Natural damage is described in terms of their characteristics.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Natural damage refers to but is not limited to flood damage, wind damage, fire damage, soil damage and earthquake damage.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Natural damage is analysed using change detection techniques.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Analyse man-made damage for image analysis purposes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Man-made damage is described based on given case studies.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Man-made damage refers to but is not limited to landslides, pollution and accidents.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Man-made damage is analysed using change detection techniques.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
  • Bomb damage: physical damage due to the blast, flying fragments, fire or radiation effects within the lethal area of the bomb at the time of the detonation, plus the effect on a country's economic, political and social structure which develop directly from the accumulated physical damage.
  • Civic damage to business, residential and town property.
  • Structural damage to structural members (trusses, beams and columns), so such a degree of severity that the damaged members cannot be repaired, but must be removed and replaced.
  • Superficial damage: damage that can be repaired without affecting the main structure and without necessitating replacement of main frame members.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
