PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to assemble Oxy-acetylene equipment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the factors critical to assembling Oxy-acetylene equipment.
  • Prepare to assemble the Oxy-acetylene equipment.
  • Assemble the Oxy-acetylene equipment.
  • Complete the Oxy-acetylene assembling process and prepare for operation and/or production.

    The principle of operation and functioning of Oxy-acetylene equipment, in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of assembling the Oxy-acetylene equipment in line with specified requirements, thus showing a clear understanding of the direct consequences to self and the business. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range must include:
  • Injury to persons, damage to equipment, loss of production time through breakdowns and increased costs.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The possible critical hazards and substandard conditions that may be encountered while assembling Oxy-acetylene equipment in a particular context, as well as how to deal with them so as to be consistent with accepted best practice.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Permission to enter the workplace, when required, is obtained in accordance with specified requirements.

    The required personal protective equipment is selected, examined and used in a way that is consistent with its purpose, design and specified requirements. Personal protective equipment is used to ensure the safety of persons and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The tools, material and equipment that are required for assembling the Oxy-acetylene equipment are selected, examined and transported in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The workplace is examined in accordance with specified requirements and any hazardous and substandard conditions are dealt with in accordance with the prescribed procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences that inadequate preparation for the assembling of the Oxy-acetylene equipment (i.e. not in line with specified requirements and current legislation) may hold for health, safety and production are explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The required personal protective equipment is used in a way that is consistent with its purpose, design and specified requirements. Personal protective equipment is used to ensure the safety of persons and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The assembled oxy-acetylene equipment is tested for leaks in accordance with specified requirements, and such leaks are dealt with in line with the requirements for best practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Work-related hazards are dealt with in accordance with the prescribed procedures. Risks associated with assembling oxy-acetylene equipment are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The equipment is assembled in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Interpersonal interaction is positive, consistent with specified requirements, promotes effective teamwork and avoids dysfunctional conflict. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The tools and equipment are used in accordance with manufacturers' design and without injury to self and others.

    The consequences for health, safety and production of not assembling the oxy-acetylene equipment in line with specified requirements and current legislation are explained.

    Clean and clear the workplace so as to be free from hazards, in accordance with specified requirements and good housekeeping practices.

    Compile the necessary report(s) on the work performed, in compliance with the specified requirements for format, content, accuracy and distribution. The report is submitted within the agreed time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Explain the consequences for health, safety and production of not completing the Oxy-acetylene equipment assembly process in line with specified requirements and current legislation.

  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
