This unit standard will equip the learner with a fundamental understanding of the historical development and legislative and professional context of library and information services in South Africa. The learner will acquire an understanding of the role of library and information services in society and insight into the contribution of a proactive service to democracy, values, social and economic development and to community building.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Describing the history of library and information services in South Africa.
  • Understanding the role of library and information services in South African communities.
  • Setting-up and maintaining community information services.

    Community profiles are conducted in terms of the diverse sectors, institutions and organistaions in the relevant community.

    The various services that would benefit a community are described in relation to the community profile. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Community information services are set up according to the needs reflected in the community profile and institutional procedures.

    A database of all role-players is compiled as indicated in the community profile.

    Application of knowledge of a community is explained in the context of Library and Information Services using examples.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
