PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard will be to develop the ability and skills of the learner in maintaining and developing a library collection responsive to the needs of its diverse community. It will equip learners with understanding of reading trends and categories of books and other library material.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Describing categories of reading and information materials available in typical library collections.
  • Demonstrating understanding of reading and information seeking behaviours in the community.
  • Maintaining and developing the collection in terms of reading and information seeking behaviours and needs of the community.

  • Communication at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.

    Describe categories of reading and information materials available in typical library collections.

    Materials include, but is not limited to:
  • Reference books, information books, pamphlets, novels, journals, magazines, audiovisual materials and web sites.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Characteristics of each category of reading and information materials are identified according to the range. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose and role of the categories is explained according to the collection as a whole and the reading and information seeking behaviours and needs and preferences of the community. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate an understanding of reading and information seeking behaviours in the community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A simple survey of reading behaviour and/or information seeking is conducted in terms of the identified community range. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reading activity is described in the relevant community using examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Understanding of the reading and information seeking activities is applied in the selection of collection resources. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Maintaining and developing the collection in terms of the needs of the community.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The "book supply chain" from the author to the reader is explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Role-players in the supply chain includes, but is not limited to:
  • Commercial publishers, NGO's, booksellers, librarians (local, regional and national) and other distributors.

    The collection is assessed in terms of balance and responsiveness to the diverse community needs and preferences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Selection criteria are identified and explained in terms of categories and needs of diverse communities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Material is selected and weeded according to identified selection criteria and organisational guidelines. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of the integrated competence described in this unit standard.

  • Assessors must be in possession of a Qualification related to Library Practice or a related sub-field of Communication and Language Studies at a minimum of NQF Level 5.
