PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is suitable for educators, caregivers and community workers working with adults and children in group, informal, family Early Childhood Development (ECD) settings, etc.

People credited with this Unit Standard are capable of:
  • Describing the transmission, progression and effects of HIV and AIDS on children, adults, families and communities.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of precautions to reduce the risk and spread of infection in adults and children.
  • Providing care for children infected with or affected by HIV and AIDS in various Early Childhood Development settings.
  • Providing appropriate support for children, staff and families living with HIV and AIDS. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communitcation at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard is to be understood within the context of the Universal Precautions as defined in the Government Gazette, Department of Education, Volume 410, No. 20372, 10 August 1999 (Notice 1926 of 1999): National Policy on HIV and AIDS for Learners and Educators in Public Schools and Students and Educators in Further Education and Training Institutions.     Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the transmission, progression and effects of HIV and AIDS on children, adults, families and communities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Basic explanations are provided of how the immune system functions and is affected by HIV and AIDS, with particular reference to the progression of HIV in adults and children. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Four general ways in which HIV can be transmitted are identified, with reference to and clarification of common misconceptions regarding transmission. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The contribution of various factors to the pandemic is described, with particular reference to the impact of the socio-economic context. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors include poverty, child abuse, sexual awareness, home environment, access to and quality of health and social services.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Descriptions highlight effects of the HIV and AIDS pandemic on community and family life and structure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Learners should demonstrate knowledge of effects on a variety of kinds of families such as child-headed families, grandparent-headed families, single parent families, parent headed families, female-headed families, care by non-biological care givers.
  • Descriptions of effects on the community should cover a variety of categories such as social structures, economic structures, state and civic services, cultural practices, faith-based services.

    Rights, responsibilities and gender roles in the transmission of HIV and related diseases are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of precautions to reduce the risk and spread of infection in adults and children.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Precautionary measures and behaviours are described and linked to the general ways in which HIV is transmitted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The benefits for self and others of voluntary testing and awareness of own status are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Sources of information and education programmes on HIV and AIDS are identified. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Provide care for children infected with or affected by HIV and AIDS in various Early Childhood Development settings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate sensitivity is shown towards community, spiritual and cultural values when dealing with HIV and AIDS and illness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An accepted HIV and AIDS policy and Universal Precautions are implemented within the Early Childhood Development setting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Wellness is supported through the provision of adequate healthy meals and access to immunization, rest and medication. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Adherence to medication is actively promoted and monitored, keeping in mind possible drug interactions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The need to protect the rights to privacy of information regarding HIV and AIDS status is described in terms of potential consequences for the individual and their family. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Signs and symptoms of illness are identified early and action taken is appropriate to the situation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Provide appropriate support for children, staff and families living with HIV and AIDS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Children and adults are given appropriate emotional support to deal with HIV and AIDS and death and dying. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate support is provided for the learning and developmental needs of children living with or affected by HIV and AIDS within the Early Childhood Development family or group setting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The disclosure of HIV status is treated confidentially within a non-discriminatory and culturally-sensitive policy framework. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Assistance with the establishment of support networks is given and/or established structures in the community are used to support affected children, adults and their families. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • This Unit Standard will be assessed by an assessor and moderated by a moderator, registered with the relevant accredited ETQA responsible for the quality assurance of this Unit Standard.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the appropriate quality assuring ETQA, or Learning Programme approval with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the quality assuring ETQA.
  • Verification (external moderation) of assessment and moderation by the provider, will be conducted by the relevant quality assuring ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant Qualification and the agreed ETQA policy and procedures.
  • An individual wishing to be assessed through RPL against this Unit Standard, may apply to an assessment agency or provider institution accredited by the relevant quality assuring ETQA, or by an ETQA that has a formal agreement/accreditation with the relevant quality assuring ETQA.
