PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of automotive body repair require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard.

Qualifying learners can assess the damage to the body shell, chassis and suspension and align the damaged area/s to the required specifications. This will contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in Automotive Body Repair - NQF Level 3. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for Automotive Body Repair in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner has already learned to remove, fit and align the various types body panels of a vehicle.

All work is performed under the supervision of a competent person and in accordance with the workplace specifications and in terms of the repair process whilst adhering to occupational safety, health and environmental legislation. 

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Understand the basic concepts of body shell and chassis measuring. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
Concepts include three dimensional measuring, critical measuring points, mechanical and electronic measuring, comparative measuring in respect of manufacturer's specifications and the tools and equipment that are used in body shell and chassis measuring.

The learner is fully conversant with the terminology and concepts used in body shell and chassis measuring. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
The learner can identify the location of the critical measuring points on the body shell and chassis and specifications in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.

The learner can identify and competently use the various types of tools and measuring equipment.

Safety precautionary measures to be taken are identified and clearly explained. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
All work is conducted with due safety and in accordance with all prescribed workplace procedures. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
The understanding of the process is confirmed by responding accurately to task related questions. 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
Assess the damage to the body shell and/or chassis and/or suspension. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Assess may include a visual inspection; conducting functionality checks; measure (long trek method); determine the point of impact; identify the location and status of the SRS and the tools and equipment requirements.
  • Tools and equipment includes a porta power and clamps.

    The learner knows and understands the various processes to perform a damage assessment.

    The learner is competent to perform and record an accurate assessment and the causes of the damage.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Mount a vehicle on the anchorage system and align the damaged area in a safe and aware manner. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Anchor includes positioning the vehicle; identifying the anchorage points; preparing the vehicle for access to anchorage points and attaching the equipment.
  • Align may include to pull/push the body shell and/or the chassis and/or the suspension to restore to the original condition.

    The vehicle is positioned and prepared in accordance with the workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The anchorage points are identified and the equipment attached in accordance with the equipment and manufacturers specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The damaged area is straightened in accordance with the workplace and equipment procedures and to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety precautionary measures to be taken are identified and clearly explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    All work is conducted with due safety and in accordance with all prescribed workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The understanding of the process is confirmed by responding accurately to task related questions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform a quality evaluation of the repaired area and restore the work area. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • A quality evaluation includes a visual inspection; three dimensional measuring; checking for proper alignment of parts and a functionally test of parts and components.
  • Restore includes the replacement of parts and repairs to the clamped areas.

    All the required inspections and measuring processes are followed to ensure that the repaired area conforms to the manufacturer's specifications.

    Appropriate corrective actions are promptly identified and appropriate parties consulted about these actions.

    All work is conducted with due safety and in accordance with all prescribed workplace procedures.

    The understanding of the process is confirmed by responding accurately to task related questions.

    The knowledge of delivering the repairs and the completion of the documentation in accordance with the workplace procedures are demonstrated.

  • The assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of the Education and Training Quality Assuror (ETQA) who has jurisdiction over this field of learning.
    The assessor will (at the very least) be accredited and have a technical qualification in this learning area.
  • The learner can be assessed in the language of his/her choice although if s/he has to report incidents or conditions to some one else, s/he will be assessed on his/her ability to report in the language commonly used in the working environment.
