PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of identifying the various types of liquid cooling systems, to prepare and position the vehicle and to diagnose and repair system faults and to record and submit a report. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

All work is performed with little or no supervision in accordance with operational, repair manual specifications and procedures and in compliance with occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare and position the vehicle for inspection.

  • Prepare includes visual inspection and the cleaning of the engine compartment.
  • Visual inspection includes perished hoses, damaged radiator core, fins, v-belts, pulleys, hose connections, fans, welsh plugs, water pump and joints.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Connect the test equipment and diagnose faults. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Test equipment includes v-belt tensioner tester, pressure tester, thermometer, hydrometer or spectrometer (antifreeze ratio tester).
  • Faults include slack v-belts, thermostat, radiator cap, sender unit, water pump, radiator blockages fan and combustion leaks.
