PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard requires that learners are able to prepare, position and monitor camera supports under instruction/supervision. Credited learners are able to select camera support equipment, and lay complex track for camera mounting to achieve the operational and technical requirements of shots.

Credited learners take into consideration the dimensions and weights of cameras and any additional camera accessories. They can assess the suitability of surface on which tracks are used, and the types of track relative to the sizes and weights of the equipment carried. Learners can maintain any required power supplies, and understand and show an active response to, the hazards accompanying the handling, moving and fixing of heavy equipment. Improved competence to lay camera support equipment improves safety during film and television productions, as well as the quality of film and television productions by achieving the requirements of shots. By attaining the required competencies, learner employability is improved by ensuring that they are able to contribute to film and television productions.

Credited learners are capable of:
  • Assessing surface suitability for camera support.
  • Selecting suitable camera support equipment.
  • Rig and de-rig camera support equipment:
    > Range: camera support equipment includes tracks, cranes, zip towers, dollies.
  • Operating camera support equipment within scope of assigned responsibility.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication and language, NQF Level 4.
  • Mount and move cameras, NQF Level 4.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Competence is required under instruction of key grips, and for any dolly mount or less without direct supervision. Operation of support equipment is limited to any rig that does not require expert safety considerations, for example, in terms of weight and balances. Therefore, support equipment that will carry people is not included, and situations where equipment damage can occur as a result of operation should be avoided. Other range statements are provided with the specific outcomes and assessment criteria where applicable.

    Additional ropes, strops and wires are fixed to prevent slippage on inclines.

    Safety stops (braking devices) are installed to prevent over speed/runoff.

    Accidental tripping is prevented at all times.

    Tracks are installed in such a way that damage from falling objects or moving vehicles is prevented.

    Risk assessments are recorded according to specified organisation procedures and requirements are adhered to. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Operate camera support equipment within scope of assigned responsibility. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    At this level, scope of assigned responsibility will include camera dollies, scaffolding up to 3 metres, and mini giraffe cranes.

    Camera movements are smooth and timed according to production, shot, camera operator and director requirements.

    Camera movements can be horizontal or vertical.

    Moves that are outside equipment capabilities or restricted for any reason are reported to all relevant persons and recommendations are made regarding viable solutions.

    All movements are agreed with relevant operators. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All relevant persons are notified regarding intended routes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Maintenance requirements are identified and reported according to organisation procedures.

    Safety requirements and operational limits are met at all times.

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the learner is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the learner can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment; appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
