PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence against this standard will be able to apply and monitor fundamental controls relevant to leather manufacturing through reading and applying recipes, process sheets and standard operating procedures, identifying, measuring and applying chemicals, reading, applying and recording process applications and recording time accurately.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Applying start up procedures.
  • Applying preparation procedures.
  • Applying retanning procedures. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification or equivalent to NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Applies to all retanning processes:
  • The processes of retanning include:

    > Wetting back.
    > Sammying.
    > Shaving.
    > Washing.
    > Re-chroming.
    > Neutralising.
    > Retanning.
    > Dyeing.
    > Fat liquoring.
    > Fixation.
    > Horse up.
    > Setting.
    > Drying.
    > Conditioning.
    > Milling.
    > Stacking (pallet).
  • The machines and equipment used in retanning will include:

    > Drums.
    > Sammying machine.
    > Shaving machine.
    > Horses (wooden/metal).
    > Setting machines.
    > Toggle, vacuum.
    > Hang, paste and drying machines.
    > Lab equipment.
  • The chemicals and materials used in retanning will include:

    > Surfactants.
    > Chrome sulphate.
    > Alkalies (mild).
    > Retanning agents.
    > Colouring agents.
    > Fat liquors.
    > Acids.

    Raw materials are weighed according to production plans and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Drums are checked for cleanliness and are flushed out if necessary according to company specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Required chemicals necessary for the process are safely prepared as required by the process to be run. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Where applicable work instructions, job cards and company safety policies are adhered to as per company SOP.

    Apply preparation procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Waste is removed and machines are cleaned in accordance with legislated waste requirements and company polices and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Materials and chemicals are stacked correctly in accordance with company specifications at work stations.

    Apply retanning procedures.

    Hides are loaded and off-loaded according to laid down procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Dye stuffs and chemicals are added safely and mixed correctly according to specified work instructions and company safety policies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Start up and shut down times are recorded accurately in accordance with standard company reporting procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Testing times and process times are recorded accurately in accordance with standard company reporting procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
