PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will equip the qualifying learner with the competencies to examine the condition of the acoustic piano. The knowledge and skills to undertake this examination will require an understanding of all the components that comprise the acoustic piano and their efficient functioning. The qualifying learner will therefore be able to evaluate condition of the instrument to determine the viability of restoration or repairs.

Learners accredited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Recording characteristics of the acoustic piano.
  • Determining the condition of the acoustic piano.
  • Determining the condition of the acoustic piano back-frame.
  • Establishing the viability of repairing and restoring the acoustic piano.

    Record characteristics of acoustic piano. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The characteristics of the acoustic piano are recorded according to organisational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Details include, but is not limited to: make, model, serial number, size and age.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The piano type and design type is recorded according to organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Types include, upright or grand.
  • Designs include, but is not limited to: over damper, under damper, over strung, straight strung, drop action, simplex and double repeat action.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A detailed inspection of the acoustic piano is undertaken, if necessary, according to organisational requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Determine the condition of the acoustic piano. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The condition of the external cabinet panels are visually inspected according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The sound quality is analysed by playing through the range of keys according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Observations of the condition of the acoustic piano are recorded according to organisational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Observations to be recorded includes, but is not limited to: loose pins, cracked sound board, defects on action, exterior finish, loose ribs, cracked or broken bridges, cracked pin block and cracked frame.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Determine the condition of the acoustic piano back-frame. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The action of the acoustic piano is removed according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The condition of the action is determined and recorded in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The acoustic piano back-frame is inspected to determine the condition according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The condition of the back-frame is recorded following the organisational method or checklist. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Recorded observations include, but is not limited to: cracked frame, cracked sound-board, cracked pin-block, loose or broken bridges, broken strings, loose ribs and broken pressure bar.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Establish the viability of repairing and restoring the acoustic piano.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The current value of the acoustic piano is determined based on the detailed inspection according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The cost of repairs is estimated according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The value of the repairs to the piano are established according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The client is advised on the viability of the repair and restoration in accordance with organisational procedures.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of the integrated competence described in this unit standard.
