PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners in a financial services and/or medical scheme environment. It serves as an introduction to medical schemes for Intermediaries and Call Centre Agents. It will add value to Medical Scheme Administrators, Product Developers, Coordinators of Medical Schemes, Internal Marketers, Scheme Administrators who target Employers and Trade Unions, learners in Corporate Relations and Marketing Departments, Fund Managers, Trainee Financial Planners and Trustees and Principal Officers of medical schemes.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Analysing the healthcare needs of a prospective client.
  • Analysing the affordability of different healthcare options.
  • Analysing the rules of a scheme in order to make an informed decision.
  • Proposing a solution to provide healthcare cover for a specific client. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • A client may be an individual or group.
  • Options may be individual or group medical schemes.
  • Critical elements of medical scheme options include, but are not limited to, solvency ratios, number of members, benefit design elements, limits, preferred provider options, savings account options, managed care, disease management programmes, age of the scheme, prescribed minimum benefits (PMBS) and geographic location.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Questions are asked in order to establish the profile of a client in terms of dependants, age profile, pre-existing conditions, family history and lifestyle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Questions are asked to establish attitudes and values relating to healthcare that could influence choice of option. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Analyse the affordability of different healthcare options.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The critical elements of different medical scheme options are analysed for suitability for a specific employer group or individual. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An option is selected that best meets the needs of a specific client in terms of affordability and suitability.

    Analyse the rules of a scheme in order to make an informed decision.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The rules of a scheme are analysed to determine benefits and how the Medical Schemes Act is applied in the rules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The rights and responsibilities of the individual as a member of a medical scheme are explained with reference to the Medical Schemes Act. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Benefit guides, rules of a scheme and other relevant documents are compared and applied to a specific group or individual. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Propose a possible solution to provide healthcare cover for a specific client.

    Affordable alternative solutions are presented that meet a client's needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The benefits, advantages and disadvantages of the proposed alternative solutions are explained with due regard for the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act (FAIS).
