PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners who manufacture or intend to manufacture surface coatings and allied products to specified requirements in a chemical manufacturing environment.

A learner credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Prepare equipment, documentation and self for the quality control processes.
  • Conduct quality control tests.
  • Conduct quality control support activities.

    This unit standard lends itself to articulation into a variety of quality control procedures within the chemical industry.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The range of in process quality control testing is dependent on the type of product and its applications, the manufacturing processes involved, the conditions of manufacturing and standard operating procedures (SOP's) and instructions. Quality control may require one or more of the following tests (but not limited thereto): viscosity (efflux or shear method), temperature, mass per litre or relative density, drying characteristics, colour, visual appearance, hiding power, mass solids, application properties.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare to conduct quality control testing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Understanding of the principles of quality assurance and the purpose of quality control testing is demonstrated and explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Documentation (e.g. batch card) is checked to ensure that the correct material is being tested and that all the required tests are to be carried out as per instructions and /or SOP's. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The equipment required to perform the tests is assembled and ensured to be ready for use. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ready for use means functional, clean, correctly set, safe. Actions to ensure readiness include rectifying or reporting deviations as per SOP's and/or instructions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Appropriate PPE is used as and when required as per batch card and/or standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Consequences of inadequate preparation are described in terms of the effects on quality of product, productivity, cost and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The GMP principles carried out prior to and during quality control operations are described and explained.

    Samples for testing are taken and/or received in accordance with SOP's and/or instructions.

    The principles of good sampling techniques are described in terms of method, representative sample, timing and quantity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All required tests are performed timeously and in accordance with standard methods or SOP's to yield results that are within the required limits of repeatability and reproducibility. The methods used are explained in terms of the underpinning technology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Results are interpreted correctly and acted upon appropriately, in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of timely and accurate testing results are described and explained in terms of product quality, customer satisfaction, productivity and cost.

    Conduct quality control support activities.

    Retained samples of the final products are taken, labelled and handled in accordance with SOP's and/or instructions.

    Documentation is completed to accurately reflect the status of each process in accordance with SOPs.

    Equipment and site are cleaned as and when required and equipment stored in accordance with site-specific standard operating procedures.

    Personal hygiene is applied, in accordance with appropriate GMP practices.
