PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for persons who are required to buy and sell gemstones in the Jewellery Industry.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Determine the weight of a gemstone.
  • Determine the quality of the colour of a gemstone.
  • Determine the clarity of a gemstone.
  • Determine the quality of the cut of a gemstone.
  • Compile a grading report.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of the grading of gemstones in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

  • The term gemstone includes diamonds and coloured gemstones, both precious and semi-precious.

    Determine the weight of a loose gemstone.

    The gemstone is cleaned to ensure accurate weighing.

    The scale is prepared for weighing and used according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The weight of the gemstone is determined in carats. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of accuracy when weighing gemstones is described in terms of the potential impact on productivity and cost. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Hazards and risks pertaining to the grading process are identified and explained with reference to team occupational health and safety and environmental impact. The appropriate preventive measures are described in accordance with specified requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Determine the quality of the colour of a gemstone.

    The gemstone is cleaned to ensure accurate grading of colour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A grading light source is prepared and used according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The quality of the colour of the gemstone is determined in comparison to master stone or relevant gemmological tables. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of accuracy when colour grading a gemstone is understood and described in terms of the potential impact on productivity and cost. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Determine the clarity of a gemstone.

    The gemstone is cleaned to ensure accurate grading of clarity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Magnifying equipment is prepared and used according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The clarity of the gemstone is determined in comparison to a master stone or the relevant gemmological tables. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of accuracy when grading the clarity of a gemstone is understood and described in terms of the potential impact on productivity and cost.

    Determine the quality of the cut of a gemstone.

    The gemstone is cleaned to ensure accurate grading of its cut. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Magnifying equipment is prepared and used according to the manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The quality of the cut of the gemstone is determined in terms of its precision. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of accuracy when grading the cut of a gemstone is understood and described in terms of the potential impact on productivity and cost. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Compile a grading report. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All the relevant information, in terms of weight (carat), colour, clarity and cut is gathered in preparation for compiling the report. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The report contains a description of the grading of the stone in terms of industry standards (4 C's). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The quality descriptions are made using gemmological terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of accuracy when compiling a grading report is understood and described in terms of the potential impact on productivity and cost.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
