PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for persons who are required to demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge to manufacture jewellery.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Understand and describe re-crystallization after melting and annealing.
  • Understand and describe the physical and mechanical properties of cast and cold worked metal.
  • Understand and calculate precious metal alloys.
  • Understand the theory and practice of rolling, hammering, fluxing, soldering and polishing.
  • Understand the causes and prevention of porosity.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of annealing, hardening and tempering of carbon steel.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge, description and understanding metallurgical principles for jewellery manufacture in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • National Certificate in Jewellery Manufacture in a production environment or equivalent.
  • Basic metal melting processes.
  • Basic metal re-crystallization processes .
  • Identification of hazards and risks pertaining to the metallurgical process.

    Understand and describe recrystalization after melting and annealing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The formation of the crystalline structure when metal freezes from the melting stage to the solidified stages is described in terms of metallurgical principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reformation of the crystalline structure when metal is annealed is described in terms of metallurgical principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The absorption and expulsion of gasses during the melting and annealing processes is described in terms of metallurgical principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The expansion and contraction of metal during the annealing and quenching process is described in terms of metallurgical principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The causes of contamination when melting and annealing metal are described in terms of metallurgical principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Hazards and risks pertaining to the metallurgical process as it impacts on the jewellery manufacture process are identified and explained with reference to team occupational health and safety and environmental impact. The appropriate preventive measures are described in accordance with specified requirements.

    Terminology used and understood by the industry is described correctly.

  • Description of mechanical properties e.g. malleable, ductile, elastic, torsion strength sheer strength, brittleness.
  • Description of physical properties e.g. alloy, colour, melting temperatures, assay, caratage, porosity, specific gravity.
  • Description of processes e.g. annealing, soldering, weight and volume conversion, polishing, grinding, rolling, drawing wire, hardening, tempering.

    The theory and practice of fluxing and de-oxidizing are described and demonstrated in terms of the job requirements.

    The theory and practice of polishing metal is described and demonstrated in terms of the job requirements.

    Understand the causes and prevention of porosity.
