PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to plan and implement a cargo handling operation in the stevedoring environment, taking into account the limitations and advantages of basic ship types and designs.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and explaining knowledge of vessel types and layout, their specific uses and limitations.
  • Identifying and explaining ship's lifting appliances in relation to vessel type and load.
  • Understanding and explaining knowledge of basic ship stability, ship stresses, structural strengths, depreciation and the impact thereof on stowing cargo. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners accessing this unit standard are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Computer Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard applies to the skills needed to effectively plan and implement a stevedoring cargo handling operation for any cargo vessel and including the loading, discharge and transfer of cargo, in consultation with ship and warehouse/transport and port/terminal personnel.

    Identify and explain knowledge of vessel types and layout, their specific uses and limitations.

    Vessel types are identified and listed according to specific uses and limitations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Cargo storage areas are identified in relation to vessel layout. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Cargo storage areas, in relation to specific uses, are identified and explained as per ship design. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Storage/Stowage limitations are identified and explained according to limitation requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Storage space/configuration, Deckstresses, Ventilation/temperatures and Maximum allowable weights and Shipper's instructions.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify and explain ship's lifting appliances in relation to vessel type and load. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Lifting appliances include but are not limited to: Gantry crane, Jumbo, Stulken, Gemini, Conventional Derricks and Jibbed Cranes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Ship's lifting appliances are identified according to vessel type and load. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ship's lifting appliances are explained in relation to vessel design. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of ship's lifting appliances are identified according to vessel type and load. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Understand and explain knowledge of basic ship stability, ship stresses, structural strengths, depreciation and the impact thereof on stowing cargo. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles of basic ship stability are described and the implication thereof explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ship stability includes but is not limited to: Hogging, sagging and deck stress allowances, longitudinal stability (trim), Transverse stability (list), metacentric height and Draft marks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The principles and implications of deck stress allowances is explained and the numerical value correctly calculated, as per information provided. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ship's structure and lifting appliance limitations, are interpreted and explained in relation to load and in accordance with loading specifications. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    The following essential embedded knowledge will be assessed in the assessment criteria attached to the specific outcomes of the unit standard.
  • Basic numerical ability of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Newton's Laws of Physics.
  • Parallelogram of Forces (Triangle of Forces).
  • Basic knowledge of naval architecture and basic theory of stresses.
  • Definition of Terms as found in the latest edition of the South African Ports Cargo Handling Code of Practice issued by the National Port Authority and incorporated into the Maritime Occupational Safety Regulations 1994 by Government notice No. R. 1904.
  • It is to be noted that the Maritime Occupational Safety Regulations 1994 (in terms of the Merchant Shipping Act) apply to this Standard and not the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
