PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to manage the sampling, measurement, and unloading of bulk grain.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Conduct health and safety inspections for bulk grain intake.
  • Manage the collection and grading of representative grain samples.
  • Monitor the mass measurement of bulk grain intakes.
  • Manage the bulk offloading of grain.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Conduct health and safety inspections for bulk grain intake.

  • Personnel: PPC (Personal Protective Clothing), PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), adherence to safety procedures and evacuation procedures.
  • Facilities: safety signage, safety guards, fire extinguishers, documentation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The use of Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment and the maintenance of health and safety standards by grain intake personnel's are assured through regular inspections in accordance with workplace safety standards or procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Personal Protective Equipment that must be used in the various grain intake areas is detailed in accordance with specific health and safety hazards and risk persons must be protected from. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Adherence to the health and safety practices are verified and enforced according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Routine fire and evacuation drills are conducted in accordance with workplace emergency procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Safety signage and colour coding standards are maintained in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Safety standards and safety guards on motorised equipment (such as grain transfer machinery) are maintained in accordance with standard workplace procedures and safety standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The availability of adequate functional fire fighting equipment in the intake areas are maintained through regular inspections and testing of the equipment according to prescribed testing intervals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The prescribed safety status inspection and evaluation documentation are comprehensively and accurately completed and administered according to standard workplace procedures.

    Manage the collection and grading of representative grain samples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Adherence to representative sampling standards and are monitored and maintained according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Adherence to representative grain sample techniques are monitored and maintained according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The possible consequences of not following the correct sampling procedures are detailed in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The use of sampling equipment is monitored according to quality, safety and work site procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Adherence to primary grading inspection standards and pre-unloading procedures is monitored and maintained in accordance with quality procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Compliance to regulatory parameters for the determination of the various grades of grain are monitored and maintained according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The particular deviations from standards that may occur in grain are adhered with according to quality and statutory requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Grain is allocated to the particular storage sites according to the grading requirements of the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    The documentation for receiving, grading and storage site allocation of grain is maintained according to workplace procedures.

    Monitor the mass measurement of bulk grain intakes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The weighbridge operating procedures are monitored and weights verified according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Calibration and assizing of the weighing and logging equipment is monitored and assured according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Documentation or records of the mass of consignments received are maintained according to standard workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Appropriate corrective measures are selected and implemented when deviations are recorded according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Manage the bulk offloading of grain.

  • Transfer of unloaded grain to allocated storage facility, offloading pits, rail trucks and road transport, grain transfer machinery, documentation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The unloaded of grain from the weighbridge to the allocated storage sites are monitored and maintained according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The offloading rail trucks and road transport into the offloading pits and the safety precautions to be followed are monitored and maintained according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The discharge of grain into the offloading pits are monitored and maintained according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The safe and effective operation grain transferring equipment in the offloading pits are monitored and maintained according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The documentation and logging records for the offloading of grain into the pits are maintained according to standard workplace procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
  • The assessment of qualifying learners against this standard should meet the requirements of established principles. Practical assessment activities will be used, which are appropriate to the contents in which qualifying learners are working. These activities will include an appropriate combination of self and peer assessment, practical and oral assessments, observations etc.
  • The assessment should ensure that all the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge be assessed. The specific outcomes must be assessed in its own right, through oral and practical evidence. It cannot be assessed by observation only.
  • The specific outcomes and essential knowledge must be assessed in relation to each other. If a qualifying learner is able to explain the essential embedded knowledge, but is unable to perform the specific outcomes, then they should not be assessed as competent. Similarly, if a learner is able to perform specific outcomes, but is unable to explain or justify their performance in terms of the essential embedded knowledge, they should not be assessed as competent.
  • Evidence of the specified critical cross-field outcomes should be found, both in performance and in the essential embedded knowledge.
  • Performance of specific outcomes must actively affirm target groups of qualifying learners, not unfairly discriminate against them. Qualifying learners should be able to justify their performance in terms of these values.

  • Have experience or an in depth knowledge of the Grain Handling or Grain Milling industry.
