The qualifying learner will be able to co-ordinate the use of all skills, knowledge, experience and resources available to the bridge team to ensure the safe and efficient passage of a vessel under pilotage.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:

  • Applying the principles of team dynamics.
  • Explaining the principles of leadership.

    The benefits of briefing and de-briefing on the bridge is explained using appropriate examples.

    Assertiveness in communication between master and pilot is demonstrated in role play.

    The challenges and related responses on the bridge of a vessel are demonstrated in role play.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Workloads includes, but is not limited to: underload, normal, high and overload.

    The characteristics, use and limitations of navigation/electronic aids used for pilotage is described in terms of the equipment used.

    Team states are described and the benefits of team work is explained using examples.

    Team states includes, but is not limited to: optimum, concerned, alarmed, bored, inattentive and critical.

    Leadership styles are described and the benefits of a balanced management style in piloting a vessel is explained in relation to bridge team management.

    Error management is explained in relation to bridge team management. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Three categories of decisions are described in relation to decision making related to bridge team management.

    Decision categories include, but are not limited to: skill based, rule based and knowledge based.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
