PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to perform load following, monitor system conditions, control abnormal system conditions and operate Automatic Generation Control (AGC). 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.
  • Operating electronic information systems.
  • Eskom Power Pool rules and Ancillary services contracts relating to controlling of frequency is known and understood.
  • Basic Protection.
  • Basic power station operation.
  • Basic Transmission operation.
  • Water management requirements and constraints.
  • Remote operations on hydro and gas driven power generating plant.

  • Shortages and surpluses.
  • Ranges for 1.4 and 1.5: Automatic Generator Control modes, up and down regulation, generator upper and lower limits.
  • Perform load following on national and international electrical transmission systems.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Perform load following. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Load following is performed according to statutory requirements, system operating guidelines and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Southern African Power Pool agreements, Eskom Power Pool market rules and Ancillary Service contracts.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Schedule program is obtained and utilised according to guidelines and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Actual and available generating capacity is confirmed against schedule program. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Adjustments performed hourly according to schedule program. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Adjustments to rectify deviation from scheduled program is performed according to reserve market merit order, regulations and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Area Control Error (ACE) is monitored and controlled within parameters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Hydro and gas turbine unit operations performed in accordance with system operating guidelines and procedures.

    Reserves are monitored in accordance to operating procedures/requirements.

    Ten minute reserve, regulating reserve, instantaneous reserve and emergency reserve and supplemental reserves.

    Instructions are issued in accordance to regulatory requirements.

    Relevant information system is timeously monitored, logged updated and communicated according to standards and operating guidelines.

    Relevant information obtained is interpreted and verified against forecast and actual demand/trends.

    Control abnormal system conditions.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the unit standard, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in the Unit Standard.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this Qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
