PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is intended for learners who interpret forensic science information and who are required on a daily basis to use information storage systems. The storage of information plays a vital role within the chain of custody of evidential material for presentation in court, and is critical to the outcome of investigations and the gathering of information pertaining to intelligence. The scientific nature of the interpretation based on facts to support findings demands a different skill contrasted to ordinary interpretation skills. This unit standard will enable a learner to use interpretation skills within a forensic scientific context.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Analyse the use of information storage formats.
  • Interpret gathered information in terms of its relevance in intelligence.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Computer literacy, at NQF level 3.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
When the term intelligence is used in this unit standard, it refers to the scientific use of forensic information within investigation.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Analyse the use of information storage formats.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Storage format must include, but are not limited to: information management systems (IMS), such as integrated ballistics identification system (IBIS), and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) such as automated fingerprint identification system (AFIS), DNA criminal intelligence database (DCID), combined DNA index system (CODIS).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Gathered information is analysed in order to select storage format.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Information storage formats are compared in terms of their advantages and disadvantages.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Information storage format requirements are explained with examples.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Interpret gathered information in terms of its relevance in intelligence.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Role of information storage formats is explained in the context of intelligence.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
When explaining the context of intelligence, its supportive function must also be addressed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The purpose of information storage formats is assessed in terms of its role within the intelligence environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The concept of intelligence within the forensic environment is explained with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
A route map for the flow of information is constructed based on a given case study.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
The route map must include, but is not limited to: reference to organisational channels.
