PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will be capable of supporting and maintaining the voice communication control systems (VCCS).

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Performing corrective maintenance.
  • Performing routine preventive maintenance.
  • Analysing and measuring equipment performance.
  • Conducting first level maintenance support.
  • Conducting maintenance support. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF level 4 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 4 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Range of voice communication control systems (VCCS) includes, but is not limited to:

    Radio and Telephone Interfaces, Server, Power Supply, Telecommunications Interface, Operator unit, HMI including but not limited to Touch Screen/key-pad, Foot Switch Handset and Headset and Supervision/Configuration management systems.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Perform corrective maintenance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Confirmation of equipment fault is verified by contact with the right customer, according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fault is analysed to determine its correct location according to organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Location includes, but is not limited to: VCCS, VHF transmitting/receiving equipment, external lines, external client equipment or PABX systems connected to the VCCS.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Faults within the VCCS are rectified using the correct procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Correct procedures will include, but are not limited to:
  • Use of supervision/configuration management system.
  • Module replacement.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Supervision/Configuration management system is employed to conduct corrective fault diagnosis in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Corrective maintenance is conducted using Supervision/Configuration management system to restore the VCCS system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Local corrective fault diagnosis is conducted by identifying alarm conditions indicated on specific line replacement units. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fault diagnosis can include inspections and testing of lines, ring cables, handsets and headsets.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Local corrective maintenance is conducted and the identified faulty modules are replaced or repaired in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform routine preventive maintenance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Preventive maintenance requirements are scheduled and confirmed with customers following organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Routine preventative maintenance is carried out in accordance with routine maintenance schedules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    VCCS equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The implications of failing to carry out preventive maintenance are explained using examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reports and logs of the status and functionality of the VCCS Equipment are generated and maintained in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Analyse and measure equipment performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All system failures and fault history, is recorded and stored in the Supervision/Configuration management system, in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The performance of the VCCS is measured using on-site test equipment in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Measured includes, but is not limited to: Testing of radio and telephone interfaces, Line level testing of radio and telephone interfaces and Server main/standby changeover.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Performance figures are evaluated and verified against manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Technical reports are compiled and the status and performance of VCCS equipment is accurately recorded in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Fault data analysis is initiated following organisational procedures.

    Carry out maintenance support.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The System is Re-configured by means of the Supervisor/Configuration Management System. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Re-configuration includes, but is not limited to:
  • Logging onto the Supervisor/Configuration management System.
  • Locking/unlocking of telephone and radio interfaces.
  • Radio channel monitoring.
  • Handling of alarms.
  • Role Transfers.
  • Online update of telephone labels/numbers.
  • Interface level adjustment.
  • Role creation.
  • Configuration of telephone/radio interfaces.
  • Configuration and testing of Telecommunication systems.
  • Adding/removing an operator position.
  • Adjustment of interface levels.
  • Rebooting of communication system.
  • Creating a backup of the configuration file.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stores work is carried out in accordance with VCCS equipment support service procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Line replacement units are drawn from stores in accordance with stores procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Faulty modules are returned to stores in accordance with stores procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    All maintenance records, job cards and fault reports are completed in accordance with VCCS equipment support service requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Maintenance Management System is updated with all logistics data in accordance with VCCS Equipment support service procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Housekeeping activities are performed at all VCCS Equipment sites in accordance with organisational procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.

    Manage information contained in data specifications for test equipment and diagnostic systems, information supplied in handbooks, maintenance schedules and performance logs to ensure accurate evaluation of voice communication control system support and maintenance requirements.

    Communicate effectively ensuring that information communicated via technical reports is accurately recorded in a neat and logical format that can be readily accessed and understood by end users as well as equipment manufacturers.
